I would like to know on this board that anyone work as a payroll auditor or a sales auditor? Is this position very limited because you are only auditing payroll or the sales of the company? I need some advice from you guys!!!

The positions you're describing tends more towards internal auditing assignments, even though they can be done by external consultants and consulting companies. These are very analytical assignments, so it's parsing a lot of data and getting good at Excel pivots and lookups.

I've been approached about a payroll auditor position. A lot of it was looking at payroll reports for unionized laborers, such as seasonal construction workers, to see hourly wages, lunch breaks, equipment, training was paid and pension deductions taken out. Was told that the employers weren't always the most tech savvy, so it meant digging through a lot of paper statements stuffed in milkcrates somewhere.

Some of the larger companies with subsidiaries tend to be computerized.

I would venture to say you would pidgeon-hole yourself in a role like that. It is very specific and narrowly-focused. Say you get into the position and hate it–will you be able to get out? If you attempt to seek a different role, a prospective employer may overlook your resume since it's so focused. Just my two cents.

@Jelly When they approach you with the payroll auditor position, did you take the job? Do you believe that this position is too narrowly focused. I think that a payroll auditor position is too narrowly focused. What do you think, since you work for a small firm?
