Hello everyone! I am about to apply for the CPA exam in Georgia and am nervous about being turned down. I was arrested a year and a half ago and am working on get it expunged from my record. The charges were Disorderly Conduct, Public Drunkenness & Criminal Trespassing. I was at a college football game and was told to leave (which I did) but then my friend was working the ticket gate and told me he’d let me back in (which I drunkenly decided was ok). After being back in the game for 5 minutes the same campus police officer spotted me and arrested me on the spot. It was a really stupid mistake and I have owned up to it and have dealt with the consequences. When I was released from my probation I received a letter saying that I was not guilty of the crimes and it should carry no weight going forward. It still is freaking me out though because I have worked so hard and don’t want it to have been for nothing. Has anybody ever been in a similar situation or know what I can expect??

You should be able to search criminal records in the county you are in. I assume if you are arrested by campus police, everything still flows through the county? Either way, I wouldn't be too worried (other than the fact you're a Dawg fan). 🙂

You could also just make an anonymous call to the state board and ask them.

    Go Gators

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

I think it is up to the state that you are applying to give you a license. I think you should be fine to sit for the exams. You most likely will be able to attain a license from your state if it is a misdemeanor. If not you can apply to other states until you attain a license. I might be wrong but if I was reviewing candidates with criminal backgrounds I would be looking for white collar and violent crimes.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I am confused. If you were told you were NOT guilty, shouldn't it mean your records are clean???

If a guy is charged with felony but in the end agrees to a misdemeanor, he would only have the misdemeanor charge on his records.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

I'm with Monk. They may only concern themselves with crimes that are financial in nature and violent. At least you didn't get a DUI. That's what I would have been concerned about. Also, the fact that it was during your college years, I believe they reasonably expect that college kids will screw up at one time or another during those years. As long as you disclose the circumstances surrounding it, they will probably overlook it. They won't look too kindly on it if you lie though.

    FAR - 10/28/16

use the search bar at the top of this page, there have been plenty of posts about DUI's, open container violations, etc. and I've YET to see someone say they were denied a CPA license because of those.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Tough Kitty- that is also something I'm not to sure about. I've tried asking my lawyer a hundred times but he's quite the piece of work.

I also feel that it shouldn't be a problem but I'm nervous as all h*** about it. I've also landed a job with one of the Big 4 and I've talked to people there that said it won't be a problem since it will be off my record by time they do a background check. I don't start until the end of October.

Maybe you should request for a detailed copy of your background check before you proceed with the licensure.
