I know this sounds like a silly question but if you get your cpa in one state can you do accountant work in a different state?

Accountant work, yes. Auditing and/or taxes, no/maybe. The rules vary some from one state to another regarding how strict they are, but generally to practice public accounting (auditing for sure, and often taxes as well) in a state holding yourself out as a CPA, you must be licensed as a CPA in that state, or the state you're in must have a reciprocal agreement to honor your out-of-state license as if it was in-state. However, you can do accounting work – say in industry – fine with an out-of-state license, or do certain public accounting tasks with an out-of-state license (bookkeeping/write up, taxes depending on the state, or any other tasks which don't require the CPA certification).
