Can I prepare my friends tax return for him (he has given me permission) and have it signed as “Self-prepared” because I currently don’t have a PTIN?

You can prepare your friend's tax return without a PTIN if you do not receive compensation for preparing the tax return. This can be marked “self-prepared.”
