Has anyone considered getting their Ph.D. in Accounting? I know that it’s highly sought after to teach at the university level, but it is respected in industry? I’m concerned about career advancement which is why I’m doing CPA study (using UWorld Roger CPA for my review). My colleagues have either CPA’s or bachelor degrees/master’s, but no one has gone to the Ph.D. level. Have you seen accountants in non-teaching roles working in public or corporate accounting, and was it relevant for their career advancement?

I have considered the PH.D program for accounting. I have applied for adjunct positions that the PH.D is not necessary, but I think teaching accounting is unique, the profession need good teachers. I think teaching provides a variety, and it is really rewarding to see students understand the materials and are encouraged to become CPA's or Accountants. I applied at the local jr college during the summer, after tax season.
If you have the time go for it.

I'm not sure it's really appreciated in the real world, say vs similar years of real world experience.
In teaching or a university setting, of course it's the pinnacle.
I would not pursue it unless I was looking to teach at a large university.
The AICPA had a program for PhD students, and you can receive some significant help with the costs.
There was a thread on here about 2 years ago about the program.

I started a PhD in Economics and abandoned it and accounting did not cross my mind at the time. Looking back, I wish it had. I think I would have been much happier doing that way back then and having a career in academia. AICPA still provides help and other scholarships are available. Different schools approach the program differently so investigate schools too and choose an excellent program. I would love to hear that you pursued this after a couple of years of experience.

Sadly when it comes to Accounting Majors, when the students see and realize the amount of work required in the classroom, most will drop out and change majors. I'm not kidding either.

Most of my accounting classes starts off being full, then within a few weeks the class is half the size.

During graduation, the accounting graduating class is about a hundred people or less while the Marketing and Management majors graduating class is 5 times that and the line snakes around the building.

At my school, those that couldn't hack it in accounting went to business, and if you couldn't hack it there you dropped back to the sciences. Not to say science is easier than accounting or business, but that seemed to be the progression of majors.

Reason why nobody goes for a PhD is because it's not really used to progress in corporate world, but to leave corporate and move to a more academia environment.

Do you like doing research? Other than teaching you are expected to pump out research papers/journal about accounting.

The best way to advance you career is to know more people. At the end of the day it's not what you know it's who you know.
