Over the past couple of years, I have been wondering what the actual pass rate is for the exam for people who sit for at least one exam. I have come across people who have sat for the exam over 15 times (God bless them), and were not willing to give up until they got it done.

What do you guys think the % is for people who sit for the exam to actual follow through and nail down all 4 before giving up due to repetitive failing scores.

Is there a thread with these figures?

What percentage of people who ever start taking the CPA exams finish all four sections? What is the washout rate for people who give up for whatever reason?

How does that compare to other exams?

The Wiley book states that the eventual pass rate is right around 75%

75% seems pretty high. I would think that there is a large number of people who go into the first test with a half serious effort, fail, and then quit. 75% would seem reasonable for people who stick with it.

As others said with the % of pass, you have to remember the average CPA candidate is about 29 years of age. I don't know if that's changed in recent years, i don't think it really has. These people are married, have families, salaried (working 45+ hrs a week), and probably in a management position or close to one. But more than anything, have been out of school for some time and regardless of what you know , the CPA exam is a test with specific constraints. Our review materials do teach us core things we need to know in accounting but ultimately, we're learning how to deal with question choices and how they're asked. Also real work experience doesn't always translate to the test because of industry practices etc.

Long story short, i think the % of pass for the CPA exam is very shady and there's no good reason to go into it. So many variables, and there's no real break down. I think it's all to keep a certain prestige towards the exam
