I am so sorry in advance for this juvenile rant/post BUT I really need to get this off my chest about a co-worker who has no clue what A71 is and will never read this! 😉

I’m not sure if this person has IBS or some other medical condition to cause this situation but it’s reached a point of near mutiny at my office and I need to rant…this person is constantly passing awful and disgusting gas in their office. To the point where you feel yourself becoming nauseous if you have to go in there for too long. The odor is simply horrendous and it’s becoming a daily occurrence. It’s seriously horrible and everyone keeps complaining to me about this person on a daily basis. Granted, I am generally the person in our firm to deliver news about office decorum compliance BUT it’s not like you can just walk up to a person and tell them to stop crapping in their pants on company PP&E! 😉

I’ve instructed everyone to act like adults, to ignore the behavior, to consider that a medical issue may be in play, and scolded people for gossiping about it…but off the record I’m just as grossed out as everyone else!!!! There really is nothing to do but pretend like it’s not happening…it’s the only professional thing to do…but come on, man!

Mrs. Toots… hilarious! I would buy a couple of those citrus magic air fresheners that actually absorb odors and hide them in her office. Those things are amazing and they don't emit much of a fragrance. I found out about them after my chimney was clogged and the house filled with smoke. The place smelled like barbeque and those things absorbed the smoke odor quickly without smelling so perfume-ish.

I have a friend that sat in a cubicle beside the office tooter. The cube neighbor was an older man and she dreaded working next to him. HR talked to him about his issue and it had no impact so she bought one of those old school cans of air freshener and sprayed it over the cube wall every time she smelled something. After having cinnamon breeze rain down on him all afternoon, he got the hint.

@san I only mention that it's a lady and it's awkward because as a lady myself I don't go out of my way to stink up my office! And it's more the personality of Mrs. Toots that makes it worse…she won't be very receptive! I assure you that my HR inspired convo will be professional and without gender bias!

If you are in charge of HR / office issues, then you need to sit her down and explain to her that her gas is negatively impacting office productivity and making others sick. While it's kinda funny, it is also causing others extreme discomfort which is not fair either.

She may have a medical disorder, but it's her responsibility to try to mitigate the side effects of whatever she may have when it's effecting others ability to do their job.

Upon request, she should also present medical proof that she has an underlying condition that prevents her from controlling her gas. If no proof is given and she continues to do this, then you're definitely within your right to reprimand / terminate her (if you have the authority to do so).

This would make a great BEC question. Ms Toots Magee has a medical problem which causes excessive flatulance at work. She has come to you ask if the expensive medical airspray she has to buy out of pocket to mitigate the odor is a deductible business expense or could it be covered under medical. Please prepare a memo outlining your response.
