How would you react when a non-cpa coworker tells you CPA doesn’t make much difference…except get your foot on the door and have leverage for job security in times of an acquisition or merger?

Just ignore them-either they don't know what they are talking about or they are jealous or insecure-no point in justifying anything to them.

Yes, the co-worker was right. CPA doesn’t make much difference until you get it.

Hater trying to knock you off your stride. Ignore it! This exam is a tie breaker. I've been told several times after interviewing well, that I only missed out bc I wasn't a CPA… So I been working to try and break the tie…

Do you work at a CPA firm? Ask them how many of the partners are non CPAs? It happens, but its rare.

One of my previous bosses, a controller, said CPA is not worth it. I wasn't surprised considering his performance/knowledge so I just said “I know right” and walked away. I didn't want him to feel threatened by my upcoming success (due to license completion) but I ended up switching jobs lol. Should have just said “sour grapes” ha!

Your coworker is right, why else would you get a CPA except for job security and opportunities? Those are very important reasons.

Those that don't have the CPA will say it isn't worth it to make themselves feel/look better. If you want to move up in the industry, it's a must.

A wise professor once told me “Getting an accounting degree and never taking the CPA exam is about the same as going to law school and never taking the Bar exam”.

Make sure you aren't rude though…you don't want any HR complaints when you're supervising them.

in a lot of situations it does make a difference, and your co-worker is thus wrong. However in some situations it may not make much of a difference, and thus he/she could be right.

I know some very successful partners at good sized firms that practice in the tax realm and have their EA and not their CPA. Hasn't been an issue with them.

Again I think on average it DOES make a difference, but I could see a situation where it isnt making a difference.

I think you are asking a biased group this question, everyone here values the CPA and is working hard towards it or worked hard to obtain it. I have had lots of success in my career so far without those three initials behind my name. Again that's in the tax realm, other areas of accounting are different stories.

I've never heard a CPA explain, or justify, why they became a CPA. Every EA explains, or justifies, what that means and why they have that and not a CPA. The CPA is the gold standard. An EA is a much less weighty cert, and while there are many successful EAs, they'll continue telling clients (who know what a CPA is) what it means that they're EAs and selling a lesser credential. Many clients won't care…but a few will. A CPA never has to say anything about certs to a client.

People who say that are lazy, stupid, jealous, and don't want you to succeed. The CPA makes a difference, a big one actually. So you should just laugh at them 🙂

It doesn't make a difference alright, that is until you get promoted and become their Boss.😂
