Nerd post…What is your favorite excel function??

I work in corporate accounting doing a lot of number crunching. I work with excel on a daily basis..I am no means an expert but definitely consider myself proficient.

Before working I hardly used excel and had very little knowledge of the program. Its a pretty useful and powerful tool if you know how to use it. I know quite a few functions…vlookups and pivot tables i use often. I would like to do more with VBA/Macros…after i get done with this CPA thing i plan on taking some classes to boost my knowledge.

Anyone have any favorite functions/tricks that they find useful?

    FAR- PASSED (11/13)
    REG- PASSED (2/14)
    BEC- PASSED (5/14)
    AUD- PASSED (8/14)

If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it isn't, you will find an excuse.

I sometimes use the function “counta” in case there are a large population where i need to identify non-empty columns .

    Currently:
    CPA - Class of 2013
    ALMI (Associate, Life Management Institute)
CISA - Passed in 2011, Certified in 2014

    In Progress:
ASA (Associate of Society of Actuaries) - EXAM P (O), EXAM FM (O), EXAM MFE (X), EXAM MLC (X), EXAM C (X)

i like to use a bunch of functions all together at once, haha.

    my most used is =if(isna(vlookup(

i have to create a lot of tables for internal management reports, and that series of function is my GO TO.

If you guys haven't heard of it check out the download software for “ASAP Utilities”. The thing is beast and I use it a ton for quick blanket changes to be made – Ex: Delete digits after first 6 characters, change everything to uppercase, replace all “X” figures with “Y” figures.

    It's awesome.

If you're a forensic accountant, SOLVER has come in handy when a client says “The total is $XXXXX, but I don't know what's included in there.”

I like the subtotal function. I'll sort and then subtotal and I can minimize the other categories of data I'm not looking at.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
