Nerd post…What is your favorite excel function??

I work in corporate accounting doing a lot of number crunching. I work with excel on a daily basis..I am no means an expert but definitely consider myself proficient.

Before working I hardly used excel and had very little knowledge of the program. Its a pretty useful and powerful tool if you know how to use it. I know quite a few functions…vlookups and pivot tables i use often. I would like to do more with VBA/Macros…after i get done with this CPA thing i plan on taking some classes to boost my knowledge.

Anyone have any favorite functions/tricks that they find useful?

    BEC- PASSED (5/14)
    AUD- PASSED (8/14)

If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it isn't, you will find an excuse.

I love vlookup, sumif, left, right, and mid formulas. I use pivot tables for everything and I was ecstatic when Excel added the “remove duplicate” function because I used to have to use pivot tables to get rid of duplicates.

Ha ha. Love this thread. I am obsessed with keeping amortization tables for my mortgage and car loan, so definitely the Goal Seek function.

I tend to appreciate the simple ones like text to columns and concatenate. Imagine the amount of time it would take to do all of that manually.

What is advanced excel though? What qualifies you as an advance user? I always see that in job descriptions and I've wondered if there is a clear definition.

    FAR - 93
    REG - 87
    BEC - 84!!!!
AUD - 99!!!!!! CPA exam complete.

None that I have seen, but I would think if you know sumif, sumifs (my favorite as well as pivot tables), lookups, matching, index, and maybe some of the PV formulas, that would put you in the ball park. It's not a formula, but I always use text to columns.

In addition to excel macros, check out AutoHotKey, allows you to make simple macros using windows alt keys.

ie: on mine right now shift+F10 sends: ^a^a!HFS8{Enter}!HFFarial{Enter}^j{right}{left} (which does select all (twice) font size 8, arial font, and runs a macro I made which is bound to “Control J” which sets gridlines=off.

Its really easy to use, and you can bind all your keys in multiple ways. That is you can set F10 to something, Shift F10 to do something else and Alt F10 to do a third thing. “yeah like I need that many or can remember that many” Well you start with a few, and within a couple years you start to use all the options.

Also, I use paste values a lot,

    So I set Control+Shift+V to send Control+Alt+V+V+enter
