Nerd post…What is your favorite excel function??

I work in corporate accounting doing a lot of number crunching. I work with excel on a daily basis..I am no means an expert but definitely consider myself proficient.

Before working I hardly used excel and had very little knowledge of the program. Its a pretty useful and powerful tool if you know how to use it. I know quite a few functions…vlookups and pivot tables i use often. I would like to do more with VBA/Macros…after i get done with this CPA thing i plan on taking some classes to boost my knowledge.

Anyone have any favorite functions/tricks that they find useful?

    FAR- PASSED (11/13)
    REG- PASSED (2/14)
    BEC- PASSED (5/14)
    AUD- PASSED (8/14)

If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it isn't, you will find an excuse.

Index/ Match is better than Vlookup in my opinion. Vlookup is limited in that you can only lookup values to the right, index /match you can look up values to the left or right – much more flexible than Vlookup. Macros are pretty simple to create because you're just recording steps in a process, but they are unbelievable great for handling redundant processes. I have my excel tricked out with extra buttons that are assigned to macros, so with the click of a button, the macro performs functions in 30 seconds that would take 20 minutes to do manually. Well worth learning how to play around with Macros and VBA code. Pivot tables are great too – use the slicers, much better.

    FAR - 93
    REG - 87
    BEC - 84!!!!
AUD - 99!!!!!! CPA exam complete.

Yeah vlookup is hard to compete with…

=sumif has saved my butt multiple times

=isnumber is also a good one!

Sumif is great, but it annoys because it does not allow multiple criteria. I use sumproduct when I need to sum data based on meeting multiple criteria. The arrays are much longer, but it gets the job done. If(and or if(or works wells sometimes, but I've had great success combining mutiple formulas.

isnumber is a good one. Nothing like a good =if(isnumber(search formula to search cells for a specific value..

I love vlookup, sumif, left, right, and mid formulas. I use pivot tables for everything and I was ecstatic when Excel added the “remove duplicate” function because I used to have to use pivot tables to get rid of duplicates.
