OT: Thanksgiving Ruined Your Diet Too, Didn't It?

If you all are anything like me, you have been staring at yourself in the mirror wallowing in self-pity since you got home from thanksgiving dinner. Since I started work, I put on a very unwelcome 15 pounds and as of about 3 weeks ago have been busting my ass to take it off…it’s true…I cut back on beer (very unfortunate) as well as other delightful treats that I used to enjoy. Well, needless to say, I’ve been a gym junkie and tracking calories like a crazy person to make sure I can stay at a deficit of about 500-750 calories per day (so as to not lose weight too quickly…I heard that’s unhealthy…truth?). But I digress…I started looking up the nutritional information on my “once a year” meal, which in hindsight, was a wonderful rationalization to eat like a young Ethiopian boy who just happened upon a cornucopia of food. Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, butter, sweet potatoes, beer (naturally), and let’s not forget about the wonderful pumpkin pie slice *cough* or two. But it’s once a year right? Wrong…so very wrong…I’m estimating that I put down close to 2800 calories…coupled with breakfast and lunch, a total caloric intake of about 3700. At 27, my basal metabolic rate is about 1850 calories a day…so that’s a caloric surplus 1850…or, in other words, completely wiping out 3-4 days of hard work at the gym/in the kitchen…or if you want to really be depressed…one half pound…in one…damn…day.

I don’t know about you guys…but the leftovers sitting in my fridge are going straight in the trash. Sorry for the off topic bullcrap…just had to vent my frustration. Damn you, pilgrims.

Spend your gym time hittin the weights, I used to weigh 230 5 years ago and after lifting for 3 years I'm back at 230 but with some muscles. They'll burn more cals just living and women like a man with some meat! It's life, a holiday, if you were training for a physique show or something I'd care about thanksgiving but most likely you aren't…….just enjoy yourself and make sure you hit the stair master today to work off part of the meal!

    I feel ya!

The good news is that you gave your metabolism a boost. One day is not going to hinder your progress too much (maybe it will be a maintenance week instead of a loss). The trick (for me, anyways) is to make sure that one day doesn't turn into a 4 day free for all or last until new years.

Also, I'm guessing that BMR doesn't take into account your exercise? Even if you didn't hit the gym yesterday, your metabolism still benefits, especially if you lift. So you are probably over estimating your calorie surplus.

Lastly, treat this as a lifestyle change instead of a diet and you won't be tempted to go crazy when you have the opportunity. It is all about moderation and learning to budget in the treats!

Cheer up and get back at it.

@DaBears — Yea man, I've been beastin' it in the gym too…bout an hour and a half between gym time and cardio every day…two days off from lifting, still hittin the cardio on those days though. I know it's just one day…it's not that big a deal, I was just bein a whiny bitch. It's tough though, bc when I was 20-23, I was an amateur boxer and I was 145 lbs, cut like sheet metal. 4 yrs later, I'm a CPA, but at the cost of gaining a bunch of weight. Granted, I was 160 when I started work, but I was still a size 33 waist!

For anyone starting in public accounting, let me give u a piece of advice:

    1) Stay the hell away from the snack table in the audit room, and

    2) No matter how late it is…find time to drag your ass to the gym…you'll thank me in a year when your coworkers are walking around lookin chubby as hell and you're still lookin' good.

1 or 2 slices of Pumpkin pie…Every year my cousin has one slice and I eat the rest of the pie before Monday…..Maybe that will make you feel better, at least you didn't eat the whole thing!? Then on Monday I go back to my regular eating habits

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

I don't know about all of the rest of this stuff, but I can tell you from personal experience that losing weight too fast is definitely not good for you. If you don't take in enough calories, your body turns to your muscles to make up the deficit. Doesn't sound like a big deal, right? Your heart is a muscle! Your body will take what it needs from any muscle including your heart. Then you get lethargic and don't feel like doing anything but you don't want to start taking in too many calories. So you don't eat enough and your body will take even more from your heart. That's how the vicious cycle starts and it very rarely ends well. Once a year won't hurt you. Instead of worrying about the extra calories you took in yesterday, think of the people who didn't take in any calories, and feel blessed.

I agree with @Da Bears above. I'm a naturally big dude and putting weight on hasn't been a problem for me EVER, in fact I used to be the chubby kid in middle school before I finally decided to eat right and exercise. Having lean muscle on you body will burn a ton of calories in addition to whatever you are burning off at the gym.

Amateur boxer eh? That's takes some insane athleticism, props. I think when I start work I'm gonna sign up for Muy Thai and Jiu Jitsu classes at night to keep me doing some cardio (getting me to do cardio on my own is extremely difficult).

Good luck with it. Lean meats, veggies, whole grains, nuts, fruits are where it's at food wise

I am with you! I had more bread and potatoes the last 2 days than I think I had all year. I didn't have too many desserts though; they just weren't worth it.

For the first time in my life, I really have to start watching everything I eat and it's driving me nuts. I was a college athlete so I never, EVER had to worry about anything – it all came off. I'm really trying to go with the advice that my mom told me when I was a teenager: “Be a complete snob about what you put into your body.” It's true. I never eat the sh1t in the breakroom in the office. If someone makes homemade cheesecake, I will have a little piece. But if there is leftover Panera or some sh1tty cookies, forget that. I'm not letting my ass get huge for crappy junk food.

Be a snob! Counting calories sucks. I'll never do it. In fact, I'd rather just be fat than count calories. That's no way to live.

I started taking a spin class. If that doesn't keep off the pounds, I don't know what will!

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

@Basebro, I had Pozole for Thanksgiving like a good Mexican lol.

I've lost 20lbs since August. I am also a gym addict. I am 5″11 and weigh 150lb. I wanted to shred some fat before getting into the weight training. I also hate counting calories. I just make sure I ALWAYS eat bfast. High proteins, low red meat, no fried foods, fruits, veggies, etc.

145 lbs? 150 lbs? you're all very scrawny

My lean body mass alone is 160lbs. Never taken steroids in my life, just naturally big and life weights occasionally.

    I'm 5'9

Lean body mass= everything in your body that isnt fat

    cool story bro
