OT – Next Door's Wind Chime Bugs Me

With all the stress and pressures I am getting (studying FAR for the 3rd time), I am easily disturbed with many petty things like my husband’s heavy footsteps on our kitchen tiles, loud TV volume, and all that. My husband has already fixed it. He keeps the TV volume low, he walks so soft, and gently every single time. It’s no longer bugging me now, so I stopped whining about that.

We live in a cul-de-sac and we’re in the middle. The young family (with 2 boys ages 5 & 3) on the third house next to ours is very nice and friendly. My family likes them a lot. And I’m pretty sure that the feelings are mutual. They have become our very good friends for 5 years now. However, today I noticed, the next door’s wind chime is getting on my nerve. I don’t think I could study well. Inasmuch as I wanted to feel and hear the breeze of the wind and enjoy the great weather today, I decided to shut my windows again (just as if it’s winter time in my room:)

What would you do if you were me? How would you dare ask your friendly neighbor to take that stupid wind chime down?

Thanks for letting me rant here.

Have you tried noise cancelling headphones? Or white noise (running water, waves, etc) through your own head phones? I downloaded an app for free on my phone called “sleep machine”. I like soft rain and kept it just low enough to drown out the noise but not be distracting. As for the TV, my husband is so used to watching TV through his headphones that he still does it out of habit.

    Good luck on FAR!

I've realized that as soon as you fix one noise there will be another to replace it while studying. You never notice them when you aren't. I got some noise cancelling headphones and when I'm not quite that edgy I just turn Pandora on my tv.

@amor- I'm the exact same way. I need quiet to study. The sound of the washer and drier in the next room drives me crazy, as does the dogs chewing on a raw hide in the living room. I've found that the best thing I can do is to have headphones or a loud box fan to drown out noise outside of the room. I wouldn't ask a neighbor to take down wind chimes- that's a bit much.

At least it's not a neighbor who works the 3rd shift and leaves their beagle out all night.

It's like this…except they also bark at leaves…the moon….air…nothing at all. All. Night. Long.

I HATE the sounds of wind chimes! So I feel for you. Wind chimes = misery and boredom. Lol.

I also took FAR 3 times so I know the feeling of that as well! Hang in there! Have a drink… I'm not advocating becoming an alcoholic, but I found having a drink in the evening helped to releive a little bit of my nervous/stressed out energy. Or do something else that helps you unwind a little. Take a bubble bath? I had a drink just about every single night while studying for FAR for the 3rd time… And then waiting for the results… OMG, torture!!! Good luck!

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

Haha I would also say you might need to invest in some noise cancelling headphones. Personally, if someone asked me to take my wind chimes down, I would probably decline. Depends on how close I was with them and how nicely they asked, but if they were enough of a jerk about it, I would put up extra wind chimes. I mean, just being realistic, understanding the stress you're probably going through, but you can't expect other people to stop living their lives to accommodate yours.

I think noise canceling headphones would be a solid investment for you. I listen to white noise of waves crashing at work. Helps me focus, actually. Good luck on FAR!

Thank you all guys for replying. I really appreciate this community. I was thinking of posting this question on my FB, but no. Only people from A71 could feel and understand this kind of ordeal.

@Baxter, I just downloaded the app you suggested. It's awesome! It's very funny that there is also Chimes Chiming on the app. It's like misery loves company. LOL. The Grandfather Clock sound makes me want to get a rope and hang myself:) The Thunder Storm makes me want to get a pair of Q-tips and clean my ears.

I like the Beach Waves Crashing and Extreme Rain Pouring the best.

@Bbranden, you're certainly right! There's always next thing to be edgy about. I hope this all ends soon.

@Aggie, I was thinking of just taking the wind chime down myself when the neighbor is not around. LOL. My husband told me to relent. He suggested that I just put a rubber band on each tube and clapper after midnight when everybody is asleep.

@Jeff, I'm glad that dog is not living here in our cul-de-sac.

    @Steph
, I'm a sort of “alcohol-virgin”. What brand/flavor of a drink can you suggest to me?

Oh Amor! I was hooked on hard ciders… I'm usually not a big drinker, but between work being 10 times crazier than ever and studying, I just needed to take the edge off! I really like Crispin hard cider and Angry Orchard. YUM! Good luck!
