Today at noon, I went to a new client’s grand opening about 30 minutes from the office and from there I went to visit with another client in the same town so I was out of the office all afternoon. While my partner and I were at the grand opening, I ran into one of the professors from my Alma mater. She wasn’t one of my favorites and was not an accounting professor, but she is the Asst. Head of the business dept. She mentioned that she had a student that was challenging one of the courses she teaches (I know for a fact that she hates this because she gave me grief over it, but I did it anyway). One of the assignments was to pick 5 CPA firms to visit and find out all he could about working in various sized firms, from Big 4 down to very small. Our firm was on the list that she approved prior to his visits to these firms. I’m guessing they used a phone book to find the firms. I don’t know how we got picked. When she asked my partner if we had received a visit, he chuckled. He didn’t laugh out loud but she could tell something happened. So my partner told her what happened. By this time, I had been dragged into the conversation. I was trying to avoid her because she wasn’t very nice to accounting majors when I was in school and I don’t think much has changed. She was not happy when we both told her that we thought it was some kind of prank. My partner asked her why she would give that assignment during a spring semester. It’s kind of inconsiderate on her part. She said it was on the syllabus and challenge students had to complete the syllabus. I know I had to complete every assignment on the syllabus when I challenged the same class, but this wasn’t on there at the time. In her defense, she had no way of knowing how he was going to act. But at the same time, in his defense, the class is a total waste of time, which is why I challenged it myself. For years it’s been known as “Secretary 101”. So I’ll give him credit for knowing how to save some of his tuition money. It’s a 3 hour course, so it costs roughly $400, but a challenge is pass/fail and is only $25 for the same 3 hours of credit. Smart move on his part.
This afternoon, I was visited, at my clients office, by the professor and my new best friend. I’m not trying to be sarcastic when I say he is my new best friend. I am being totally honest and sincere. The poor kid got stuck with her for his Advisor and she is making him complete an internship in order to graduate in December. It’s total BS on her part, but he just want’s to graduate and he wasn’t planning on taking any classes this summer anyway, so he doesn’t want to complain about it. He told me that he deserved it for the way he treated us and he apologized. He has visited the other four firms, ours was the first, and he has decided that he want’s no part of a big firm. He liked our set up and wanted to intern with us this summer if we had an opening.
So to make a long story short, I have a very eager, unpaid, intern for 8 weeks this summer. At least, I’m not required to pay him according to the school, but I’m sure I will because I don’t intend to have him doing busy work and getting in the way. If he takes up space in the office, then he’s got to pull his weight. If he’s pulling his weight, then he should get paid. Fair is fair. He worked with me at the client’s office for an hour today and he seems really excited about this summer and he told me that he had a lot to learn. I don’t think there will be any problem with him being able to handle certain tasks. And since it’s the summer, he will be exposed to tax returns (I still have 42 on extension including my own), Write-ups, and I have two audits to finish before June 30th.
So all is well.
