I was looking around #howshouldweaccountforme and found one that was something like “When HR tells you that a member of the engagement team is not comfortable with swearing in the audit room: ‘That’s [BS]’.”
So it made me curious…is swearing allowed in your office? Are you public, private, or government? And…are you comfortable with it yourself outside of work?
My last workplace (public) was all goody-two-shoes Christian, so I kept my mouth shut there. π My new workplace (private) seems like it will be too professional to allow it, but we’ll see (I start Monday). Myself, I figure words are words, so at home, I’ll use them and have no problem with people using them around me. π

LoL.. I like your question…
I guess it's Yes and No.. depending on the environment… Here's my experience…
Non-Profit: absolutely no, strict, dress shirt, tie to the neck, type of environment… everyone was so FAKE, every single day I walked in.. it was a fake “Good Morning, and then a smile “… I absolutely hated this environment… I could NOT be myself… but there was one co worker which I was really cool with.. we would chop it up, and chit chat, and talk shit, about everything.. you know.. being human…
Public corporation: Oh Man, if I could get a nickel for each time I heard the word fuck, or wtf, or got damn it, son of a bitch, etc… u get the point… I'll be rich… but anyway.. I kinda like it like this.. people are real, they are themselves.. u got something u want to say.. fucking say it… isn't this how u normally act with your very close friends??? well, be yourself at work too,.. anyway.. one thing i find real funny is.. even the cfo and controllers.. when they sit on chairs in the office, they would tilt it back, like ehhh… i guess how we all use to do when we were in elementary school? tilt it back, hang on it, one arm swinging… feet on the table… that's the type of environment i'm in. and I kinda like it… that's why at the same time i don't want to leave to go big 4.. (regarding my other thread post)..
anyway.. it really depends on your enviornment… and your team of course.. see how their personality is.. If they are up tight… shit… be yourself, and curse a bit.. see if u can change the boring old environment… I'm sure everyone has it in them.. be yourself.. seriously..

At our office, the f-bomb is not tolerated but “less offensive” profanities are OK if used in humorous context. For example, if you need to call our software provider and they tell you 32 callers are ahead of you no one will give you a dirty look for an exasperated outcry of “32 callers?!?! Come on, man. That's bull sh*t”.
Here's another: my assistant scanned a crap ton of documents per request of a client for me but was doing so in a rush and scanned everything backwards as we were crazy this week with the 9/15 deadline. Seriously, I had 100+ pages of blank paper! I always check the pds for quality before sending so no harm/no foul but I did think it was funny as normally she's spot on 24/7, so this was a perfect time to raz her. I buzzed her and asked her in a dead serious tone to bring me some lemon juice and a lighter, so I could bring the “invisible ink” scans to life for the client. She blanked for a few seconds then we both hysterically laughed, she called me an assh*ole, I called her a dipsh*t, and we laughed about it all day. I'm sure if I worked at a corporate place, I would have been fired for calling a subordinate a dipsh*t and she could have been canned for calling me an assh*ole. Good natured fun is always welcome at our place!
That being said when a client walks through that door everyone minds their Ps & Qs and no swearing is tolerated, even if the client is swearing like a drunken sailor!

Most swear like drunken sailors. I've was on a call with our regional president and the CEO once and it makes those swearing drunken sailors look like nuns in church on Sunday.

September 15, 2013 at 3:39 am #446360LSNYCMemberMy goal is to cut back on the swearing at work. I was pretty good last week, I would say if you can avoid it don't do it. My goal is to keep it to conference rooms. We have an open floor plan no offices, so it a bad habit that I'm trying to break… Is it ok in my work place, probably not but I do it all to often.

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

September 15, 2013 at 4:16 am #446362AnonymousInactiveI don't wanna work for a firm where I can't use my natural language, at least with most similar level co-workers. This is a big thing I try to evaluate during networking, interviews, etc. while I look for work. You can't really curse during an interview, so it's tricky to figure out what people might be like in an open environment. I probably think about this sort of stuff more than I should, but I've worked at too many places where you can't say shit if you fall in it, literally – no thank you!
However, my expectation is that professionals should be perfectly capable of turning it off like a switch when appropriate.

September 15, 2013 at 12:52 pm #446364peetreeMemberI try not to swear at the workplace but when I find out the person before me didn't file a years worth of quarterly withholding/employer contribution returns to a variety of states, it makes it really really hard.
If you must swear, make sure it is the correct audience and do it quietly.

September 15, 2013 at 1:00 pm #446228Jennifer WadeParticipantI try not to swear too much at work – and when I do its mostly related to pc issues.
The two industries I've worked in were auto parts retailer and tobacco processing so…. tons of swearing all over the place. The auto parts was worse with dropping f-bombs everywhere. The tobacco processing is a bit more tame in their swearing – but I've heard their drinking is outrageous on business trips.
