Hey guys!! I’m Indian working in a CPA firm…I love my job and pretty much do what I thought I would be doing while taking the CPA exams. Recently, part of me really wants to work with other Indians (I’m not saying just Indians, but at least couple other Indians as co-workers) to feel like I belong. Everyone at my work is great, but somehow, I feel like I don’t totally connect with them and it’s making me question my future at this firm in a long term.

However, some firms that I’ve looked at it…I see very little Indians in a staff accountant roles. Is this true? Are there not too many Indians in this field? If you are Indian working in a CPA firm…please post:)

    Thank you!!

I have no problem connecting with Indian folks. As a matter of fact I met an Indian gentlemen at my gym who gave me his sister's phone number who sat for the exam before me for study tips. He's the only Indian in our massive gym. He's not going to go find a gym flooded with Indians just because some people don't talk to him. He assimilated, granted he wears a head rag.

I agree, that's what happens when you post a thread stating a preference for your particular race/ethnicity.

What do you mean by assimilated anyway? How much more assimilated can you get? It seems like he is plenty assimilated. He speaks English, is highly educated, passed the CPA exam with good scores. I cannot see someone being more assimilated than that unless they were brought into by a white family.

Problem is that you can come here, do your best to assimilate but never actually belong. You ‘may' be tolerated but you will never be fully integrated because of certain individuals who at the drop of a hat turns around and tell you you don't belong in this country.

Being tolerated and being completely integrated into the group is very different.

For evidence of this I can point to times in American history where a group being ‘assimilated' did not help the group from being persecuted.

Omg this thread completely took a different turn than what I had intended to be.

To those who defended my posts, thank you! Much appreciated!!

Last couple words to end this topic: I have no problem working with different cultures…if that was the case @law0915, I wouldn't be in this country. Let's not make this post negative. It came from a genuine place and I just wanted some perspectives on it.

@CPA628 – I think the rest of us realized that your post was genuine with no malice/discrimination intended, but a forum like this will usually open things up like this…

Is there a “request to close topic” button?

Bottom line is if you work full time you spend more waking hours with your work peers than you do with your own family and its pretty normal to want to have at least one or two peers who have more in common with you than a passion for journal entries LOL.

This is why I feel like the system in general fails kids leaving high school. Big focus on lucrative career paths absolutely no discussion of quality of life, work/family balance etc and its disappointing to see kids invest time and money to go into a career that maybe isn't the best overall fit for them. I swear internships should happen at the very beginning of Freshman year of college so kids can get a vibe for a work environment BEFORE they choose a career path.

And last chance, report the post requesting it be closed. A moderator will see it and likely close it. I have chosen NOT to be a moderator anymore because of some whining that I was so negative, or I'd do it myself.

@mla – I will leave it to CPA628 to close it since they are the OP. I don't know how to report a topic to be closed…

As an Italian immigrant, I completely understand where the OP is coming from. I, too, don't feel like I belong, at times, in the office. I may face more problem than you because Italian is my first language. A lot people here claim to be Italian but don't speak a word of Italian, or have no knowledge of their ancestral lands, or maybe have a grandma who is Italian. They are very American, and not Italian in any sense. So American Italian is not Italian – just for the record. I think they call themselves Italian because it sounds cool. I used to feel out of place, as well.

My solution: I made friends with people from collective cultures (1 Indian, and 2 Russians). Italian culture has still retained a lot of its traditions and we are still collective, so having friends who can relate, makes your life a whole lot easier.

Do your 9-5, but then ‘charge up' with your friends in the weekends to come back fresh for another week.

The reason you won't ever work with a lot of indians in accounting is because they're ALL doctors lol. I'm from the Indopak region as well so I hope no one takes offense to this funny but very true statement
