I love dogs and I want a boston terrier or two. The problem is that i work in public and live in a one bed room apartment. I’ve been holding it off for the longest time because i know it’s not right to get a dog when I can’t really spend time with him/her 5 months of my life and there’s no one else to play with in a apartment with no backyard… do any of you guys work in public, live alone but still own a dog/s? is it messed up that i’m even thinking about getting a dog? if you do have dogs, how is it working out for you? any advice for me?

I wouldn't do it given your schedule. Others may disagree, but for me, if you can't give your dog at least a full hour of walking per day then you shouldn't have one.

If you insist, then I would adopt an older dog from a foster group that is low energy and would sleep most of the day anyway. As a former Boston owner I can tell you that they have plenty of energy, especially as puppies, and if you live by yourself it'll probably just be a bad situation for you and the dog.

money solves most problems- You could pay to have it walked daily or you could take it to puppy day care. I have a mini Doxie that goes to preschool every day. I am married though and it is still a lot to juggle. Aka can we leave him that long, who will watch him, and can we get a sitter type decisions. There ways to do right by a dog though if you can't be there all the time it just becomes more a factor is it worth it

If you can't afford dog daycare/dog walking during busy season, I would HIGHLY recommend contacting a local rescue and discuss fostering a dog during the off season. It will give you a sense of the huge responsibility without taking on a 10-15 year commitment. There is a huge need for foster homes, and while some agencies insist their fosters have someone home with them all day, some will allow a foster parent to work full time. Another option is to volunteer at a shelter, where the pups are not your responsibility full time but you still get your doggy fix AND get to help a worthwhile organization.

I LOATHE when I see people trying to rehome dogs that they really really really WANTED but realized they don't have the time or money for one. (Dogs are expensive!)

Most points already covered, but I would also give consideration to your fellow neighbors. Having lived in an apartment, many years ago, my neighbor had a Beagle that would bark and howl for hours on end. It was an awful experience, both for me and my neighbors, but also the Beagle as his owner was a salesman and worked long hours commuting to all areas in the Midwest.

I would say no, especially if you're going to get Boston terriers. Not only are they very high energy, but they also require a lot of attention, i.e. they NEED you as a companion. Consider getting a cat, at least for now. They sleep all day, don't require as much attention as dogs, and are very low maintenance when you find yourself working long hours, traveling, etc., because as long as you leave them with enough food and water and multiple litter boxes, they are good for several days.

Why not just get a girlfriend. At least she'll help around the apartment and she'll be house trained. The only thing you have to worry about is that she will often get those mood swings during that time of the month : )

I'm getting a dog either in the fall or next spring. I should have the ability to go home for like 15 minutes during the day so maybe that will help. I'm also by myself. I could see if I could work something out with a neighbor or friends. But I have a yard and parks pretty close.

@MCHammer nice. what kind? a puppy? do you live alone? how's is it working out for you?

i had a cat name soap (a Norwegian forest cat) i enjoyed her company but if i ever get another pet it would be a dog. I understand that bostons do require a lot of attention and i don't have the type of money to have my dog at a dog daycare all day..

it always comes back to not owning a home. it's just so sad that i can't have normal things i want in life, like cooking on my own charcoal grill and dogs running around you know? all because I don't own a home. I work so hard slave 5 months out of the year but not allowed to have the joy of having dogs..

let's hit that mcqs people.. let's get that license work hard move up and make more money.
