Hello everyone, I am a 23 year old from NY w/o a driver’s license. Last year I spent $400 for 15 lessons, took the test, then failed it and have not drove since then. I am very frugal and did not want to pay for anymore lessons. My parents do not drive and we do not own a car so I am not able to practice. It cost about $20 for a 45 minute lesson, but I am really frugal. Its difficult for me to ask my friends to let me use their car, fear crashing it. Sometime when I am out of town for an audit, everyone on the team rents out a car but I am the only one who does not drive, so I feel left out. I think studying for the CPA has been my excuse for not working on getting a license too. Does anyone have any advice?

When you figure it out will you come back and share what changed for you? Can't get my 21 year old son to get his license (despite giving him a car) and I'm stumped. I got my license the DAY I turned 16.5, couldn't wait!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I didn't get my license for awhile, too, due to cost, so I understand (was in college; could walk to college & work, didn't want to pay for car insurance [would've had to be added to my parent's policy and pay for it if licensed], so waited to get my license). I also failed the exam a couple times, mostly due to having changed states between classes and test, and the tester using terminology that wasn't used where I took the classes. So, sympathy all around. 🙂

As far as advice, why did you fail? You don't have to tell me/us, but knowing why you failed might help you learn how to improve. If you think it's just lack of experience in a vehicle, then I'd find a friend with a very old car to practice in. 😉

Go to the arcade and play some racing games. Find a friend that you deem to be your “best friend” and ask him/her if he can help you out learning to drive. If your in New York City its probably better if you go out in the country or a small town and drive around in a school parking lot for a while. When there is no cars in the parking lot, so a weekend.
