I have a question for the guys of the forum (or women if you’re men’s fashion savvy 🙂 ).

I’m in the process of getting new dress shirts since I’m starting work in October (Brooks Brother’s 50% off sale=clutch). I am right between a 33 and 34 sleeve length. Without a jacket, the 33 sleeve length actually looks great. The sleeve touches right where I want it to when my arms are hanging, and they sleeves don’t ride up really at all when my arms are outstretched. The problem comes when I put on a sport coat or blazer. The 33 does does not show the 1/2″ I would like it to past the end of my jacket sleeve. The 34 is perfect with the jacket. However, without the jacket, the 34 is clearly too long. There is too much fabric bunched on my arm and the sleeve is too low on my wrist/hand.

Basically, the 34 works with a jacket but not without one and the 33 is the opposite. The group that I’m joining (advisory) generally has to dress in a more formal fashion than audit/tax. My recruiter said I can expect to be in a suit or wearing a sport coat about 1/2 the time. I’m thinking the solution might be to get the 34 and have them tailored. Has anyone else run into this problem? I’ve had plenty of suits and pants tailored, but never dress shirts, so I don’t know how well it’s going to work. Thanks in advance.

I guess to each his own – I live in South Florida, and I can tell you men here do not usually wear undershirts simply because it's too darn hot and humid. I never have, and I never met with a partner who did, either. Different cultures for different places.

Back on topic, Brooks Brothers slim fit is the best in my opinion.

Taylor the jacket, not the shirt.

Brooks Brothers makes excellent shirts….i recommend the extra slim fit non iron dress shirts. I bought quite a few last year when they had the huge annual sale. I have Express shirts too (extra slim fit) and they are nice but not quite as good of quality and i like the non iron that BB has to offer. Express shirts do come a a nice variety of colors.

As far as an undershirt goes, if you wear a dress shirt unbuttoned at the top, DO NOT have an undershirt showing. It looks tacky and unprofessional. We are not in fifth grade anymore. I understand you dont want to have chest hairs hanging out but you can take care of this another way. My recommendation for you if you MUST wear an undershirt is to get the low cut vneck ones hanes or a similar brand offers. You get the benefit of an undershirt yet you dont look like a complete stroke.

@Beavis is right on! Undershirts should not be showing, that's men's fashion 101. And I totally agree, if you have to wear one, it should be a V-neck! That, or just groom!
