Hi, quick question. I know H&R block offers an exam where you can opt out of going to (and paying for) their tax school. Does Hewitt offer the same?

I have a great full time job but always wanted to do taxes on the side. Would like a year doing “McTaxes” because I figure thats pretty much what I’d be doing on my own (mostly friends, referrals, simple W-2 and interest stuff maybe grow it in a few years). I realize the pay is garbage and the hours are hit or miss. What I’m looking for is to learn a pace, to begin to anticipate customer complaints/”emergencies”, etc This is not really a career strategy or anything and while some mad money for manicures would be nice I don’t care about the pay just the customer service aspect and maybe some time management strategies. Too late in the year for VITA but frankly the only local office is somewhere I would prefer not to be…….ever LOL.

I think that your CPA should be replacement for any type of certificate you can earn through the school. That was how I interpreted the CA requirement (CTEC or CPA). You should call and ask.

Well I tried for H&R a few years ago (actually used their test as part of my studying for REG) and they demand either the proficiency test or their paid classes regardless (oh, and everyone starts at the same rate, if my high school daughter was to get hired there we'd make the same) They see their classes as a substantial source of revenue LOL.

Yeah, I am sure that is true. I paid $29 to access the Jackson Hewitt class last year and I didn't even finish! It was too much with the CPA prep. It was good information for REG, though, I felt like what I did do with JH helped in some aspects on the exam.
I have a feeling that JH is a little less stringent than HR Block. Also, the whole thing is online … it is entirely possible that you could take the exam without actually watching the videos or doing any course work, if it were necessary to take the assessment. I was told by the hiring manager that a CPA would replace the CTEC (that might be a CA certification) material, or at least that is how she made it sound =/
