Thought this article was interesting. I found that adjusting from studying life to normal life, how I actually felt I had more time when I was studying because I had everything scheduled. Now everything is a little more choatic, but it doesn’t have to.

@little#CPA Thanks for sharing the article – I enjoyed reading it. I'm with you, too, about life seeming busier post-studying… I was actually thinking today that I may need to start studying something just to give my schedule structure and keep my mind active! I can't point to hardly anything that I'm doing now that I didn't do while studying, yet it seems like I never have time to do things that I was able to do while studying… Amazing what lack of structure does! Needless to say that all of my glorious plans for what I'd do with my free time haven't materialized. 😉

I've been thinking a lot, though, about the busy-ness addiction in our society and how to not fall prey to it. We all worked hard to become CPAs so that life could be better, but if we get a job with our CPAs that works longer hours and keeps us from ever being home to enjoy what we got, then was it worth it? Seems like every position I see that would be a move up for me is also a move to much worse hours. I'm hoping that they'll just be for a season, but still wonder how much they're worth…

I'm basically just rambling, but have been thinking about this a lot so enjoyed seeing the article.

Great article. I've been missing studying and never thought I would. I'll gladly take studying over busy season in a heartbeat.

Anyway, the article was dead on. I realize I've used the excuse “I'm so busy” to really do somethings I need to do. Yes, it was easier when I had a set study schedule.

Lilla, I ditto you on your 2nd paragraph. I'm concerned about work/life balance right now. I'm going to post a Q soon about tax work in public accounting and what your firms are like as I've now worked for 2 very different firms.

Glad you all liked the article. It really hit me hard. I've been thinking a lot what I want to do next. I like having something to look forward to. This tax season I've been trying to truly focus on what I am doing and learn more(be a better accountant), since I don't have the exam looming over me. My boss mentioned supporting me to get my CVA(Certified Valuation Analyst). I might just to have something to do (other than plan my wedding!). I really need to take a good look at the my long term goals and plans. I'm even struggling with when should I have kids…. do I put in a lot of time and work to my career now, just to put things aside when I have kids?

Regarding work and hours, it's tough. I've worked insane hours before and now I am lucky to have an awesome job with amazing hours(I'm doing 45-50 for tax season). Life is too short, if you can do the grunt work for a short time and get out, then maybe it won't be so bad. But it isn't always easy to escape once you're in.
