It was suggested that I start an Off-Topic thread so that people didn’t need to start a new thread every time.

@BaxterCPA: You are AMAZING!!!! I am saving this post 🙂 Thank you SO much for the kind words!
Yes, unfortunately, communication issues is a common problem for many relationships….I wish we had psychology classes in high school! You Dad probably assumed you already knew you were friends and you actually needed to hear it….but I am sure you had a good reason to doubt your friendship, because Actions Speak Louder Than Words, and if you don't feel it, most likely it's not there…..
But here is what I learned when I got older 😉 — most guys never really mature, and their mental state can stop at 17 yo or somewhere near that age so they are not ready to be parents…..it's not their fault really, so cannot really blame them for that…. it's like my sister — she posted on FB that our cat (which we had since 1995) passed away “a month ago” — it did NOT cross her mind to e-mail me this news ASAP!!!!!! It was a few years ago, so not recent….then one other time I asked her why our mom hasn't been online recently. She said: “I don't know…..oh, BTW, our grandma is in the hospital”…….Umm…yeah….that's just my sister………..guess she took more after my father….haha………..

California CPA since 1/30/14January 23, 2014 at 3:14 pm #529690tough_kittyMember@M.O.D.: Well, I wouldn't say I come from “dysfunctional” family…..I guess that's the term they used in the past for single-parent families, but it doesn't really apply in my case. I had a VERY happy childhood…..I just didn't have a male role-model in my life growing up, but you know what – better NO male role-model than someone like my father………..
My mom was “mean” because my father was “mean” first……and he didn't care to pay child support…..My mom moved to a foreign country and raised me and my sister all by herself. He didn't care to help. It's a long story but yeah, things happen…..I kind of repeated my mom's fate – got married to a “foreigner”, moved to a foreign country, got a divorce….At least I didn't have any kids with my ex. My sister is divorced too – runs in the family, hehe………….
OK, enough of confessions for one day 😉
It's too bad you don't communicate with your parents…..Parents are supposed to be wiser….Unfortunately, it is not always the case…

Then, my step monster proceeded to convince my father over the next few years that my husband ONLY married me for the green card (not true..he came here on a work visa, is a professor and star in his field and is now a US Citizen…I never signed one paper…he did it all on his own merit) because WHY on earth would someone that wonderful marry ME if he didn't have to. Yeah…families…whatever. =/

January 23, 2014 at 4:26 pm #529694tough_kittyMember@BaxterCPA: Haha, sounds like we are! I married an American because I was madly in love with him, but of course whenever I mention my divorce and the whole story, I feel like no one really believes me and everyone assumes I married him for the green card…..but can't really help what other people think.
The truth is, I didn't even like the US when I first came to visit on Work & Travel visit. Perhaps because I stayed in Reno, NV 🙂 Ironically, I ended up moving to the US even though it was NOT my plan. I had an MA degree back in Europe and a good career…..Here I couldn't do much with an MA degree in English! Had to start a new career, hence accounting, since I always LOVED math and numbers. So, it all turned out great for me in the end….but YES, I know exactly what you mean about the green card thing….and those second wives can be mean! So, sounds like she had a lot of bad influence on your Dad 🙁

California CPA since 1/30/14January 23, 2014 at 4:50 pm #529696nbad311Member@ so1913 that is so great!! Good for you. Running is hard man! My BFF ran a NY marathon and said yes it's a lot of training, but basically she could eat whenever and whatever she wanted! That would be awesome (if you are obsessed with eating like me!)
I have been contemplating signing up for an aquathlon, which is a triathlon without the bike part. There is one here in Georgia in June and another in August. It's a 5k run, 0.95 mile swim, then a 10k run. Exam is outta the way and the weather is headed for Spring/warmness, so I pretty much have no excuse NOT to!
