First time for me to see and read this, and hoping for a good and interesting discussion. Do you think this is something to be concerned of?

My first thought: ain't gonna happen. Sounds to me like those who want to do away with professional and occupational licensing are not smart enough to pass exams. It's like DiBlasio trying to get rid of the entrance exams to the NYC specialized high schools.

If one wants the privilege of being called a CPA or whatever else, earn it. I don't see the value in taking away professional licenses except to make those with below-average intelligence feel better.

Automation is probably the biggest threat to the license. The big firms just don’t like to admit it.

I completely agree, I don't think it will happen either. I cannot understand or conclude any benefits that would result for the weakening or elimination of professional licensing and occupations. Granted, I am not a CPA, still working my way through these exams, but the requirements and these exams all seem fair.

CPAs tend to get caught up in the general push for licensing deregulation pushed by free market purist lobbies, but since the CPA is only required to practice public accounting (as a principal, not even necessarily as staff), and not accounting in general, the scope is already very limited to a point where the market, as it is organized today (and for the foreseeable future), could not function without a form of CPA licensing. I definitely anticipate more harmonization between states on licensing requirements, and a continued push for CPA mobility (looking at you, California), but CPA licensing itself is not going anywhere any time soon.
