I got my BEC score last night and was stunned that I got a 60. Everything in the exam went well I thought but apparently I was dillusional. The reason I am posting this is a need serious help in deciding what to do. Briefly, my situation is I am 46 years old, worked as an accountant 12 years. I work full time, am married and have a 7 year old. I have been studying non stop since 2010 and my husband is no longer supportive of me studying. He has done a tremendous job of helping me but he is burned out and feels that at this stage of my career, I can be replaced with someone overseas just as easily that is cheaper and already has an equivalent to a CPA. I don’t want to work in public accounting. I undertook this journey after I was laid off by a major oil company after 9 years in 2010 as a way to maintain marketability. I made 6 figures last year, work no overtime and very little stress BUT am not really challenged. My manager does not really value my contributions nor my ambition to grow professionally. I have sacrificed to much for this exam but I need to be realistic. Please only supportive feedback…also, I average about 20+ hours a week studying, used Yaeger, Ninja Audio and Notes and Wiley Testbank.

You said it—marketability. I think you would sleep better at night knowing that if something happened with your current job or you'd just like to try something new you would have an easier time doing that with a CPA.

Also, you have sacraficed a lot at this point. You're so close! It would be a shame to stop now 🙂

Good luck I hope you finish!

Why would you want to give up now, when you only have 1 left? The number one reason why people give up so fast is because they tend to look at how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have gotten. Don't fall into that hole.

You NEVER know what can happen in life, maybe you don't HAVE to HAVE your CPA license now, but maybe in the future you will need it to get the job of your dreams. No regrets!

Find a compromise with your husband, tell him this is a personal goal and has nothing to do with furthering you in the market place anymore. There is always a compromise. Hire a babysitter/tutor for your child after school. Put him/her into karate, swim, musical instruments lessons; then run to the library and study!

You're only one test away from becoming a CPA. It would be stupid to quit now. Unless you just won the lottery, I cant think of any other reason on why someone should quit after passing 3/4 (and no expirations) of the exams.

Also, impressive FAR score. Any tips for the 17 point jump on try #2? Did you retake it immediately after failing the first time or did you go for other sections first?

    FAR- PASSED (11/13)
    REG- PASSED (2/14)
    BEC- PASSED (5/14)
    AUD- PASSED (8/14)

If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it isn't, you will find an excuse.

I can understand. I switched careers from a retail manager to accounting in 2010. I started taking exam parts in 2011 and did not pass either part I attempted. I am coming back to it two years later because I feel that it is the most marketable thing that I can do for my career at age 40. I know that there is a lot going on in your life but like many of the other folks said, you are 75% done! The CFO at my company told me that earning my CPA shows dedication to the profession. That may sound a little cheesy but I respect her and that was one of the things that has kept me moving through this process! Good luck! 🙂

It seems like you are basing your decision on what other people think/want. What do YOU want?

Your employer may not be supportive, but will you always be employed there? A manager that does not value employees or encourage them to grow is not a very good manager IMHO. Why be swayed by the opinion of such a person?

Your family is certainly important. As someone mentioned above, you've already come so far to give up at the end. If you want to complete the CPA exams, then have a talk with your hubby and work it out. Let him know it is important to you (if it is). Jennifer241 had some great ideas about activities or help with your 7 year old.

Not trying to sound callous…but why in the hell would you even dream of doing that? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Thus far, you have failed on your first attempt of every section and then passed relatively quickly. You are more likely than not going to pass the exam in the next window. Quitting shouldn't even be a thought.

You can do this! One left BEC take it and kill it in July! I know how hard lack of support can be, but just think after this last one you can be done forever!

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

Easy answer. If your child was so close to achieving such a tremendous personal goal but was questioning continuing on, what would you tell him or her to do? Whatever advice you'd give your children you need to be prepared to follow yourself.

    Now get back to studying!

    Thanks everyone for their feedback,

I can't belive I forgot the most important part, aside from hubby being burned out…I lost my FAR credit yesterday so I have 2 exams to pass. Does that change anyone's feedback?

    @mjp44

I went through the whole review again Yaeger, answered all the MCQ's, spent 3 days in a hotel before the exam. That is how I went from a 61 to a 78

Doesn't change my feedback at all. Maybe find some extra support short term (ever hire a weekly housekeeper? Use a grocery delivery service? Send hubby and the lil one away for a weekend somewhere fun?)

You have to do this. I was 41, had a 10 and 17 year old so my kids were older but you're setting such an awesome example. You've all sacrificed so much, get to the final prize!
