My (unfinished) story on the CPA journey by reloadedxp

I don’t know if my story matters or not, but it does give hope to some people out there (just like myself). I started out with taking FAR. It was my first CPA exam and I failed (66). Disappointed, I continued the journey with AUD, which I failed (60). Feeling horrible, I did not give up and took REG. I failed (73). I still did not give up. I pushed hard and I took AUD again, which I failed (65)!!!!! AND then I gave up.

But one of my friends told me this – you can take the CIA or CISSP or CISA route (I am an internal auditor btw) instead of taking this exam, but you will always have that “empty” or “incomplete” feelings in your mind – that unfinished gap. I, for one, do not wanna have that unfinished gap. Whenever I see the CPA distinction somewhere, it will always bring me down and make me angry and upset that I didn’t finish.

After giving up for a week, I hit the books again. Towards the middle of June, I decided to go for it. So, I took 3 CPA exams in the month of July – FAR, AUD, and REG. I am retarded, I know. I do not know how this happened since I only reviewed for a week or 2 for each exam, but with some insane miracle, I passed ALL THREE of them – FAR (82), REG (80), and AUD (90). I recently took BEC a few days ago for the first time. I hope that I pass that last exam and complete this intense, yet wonderful journey.

NOTE: I am not telling you to do what I did. Please, do not get the wrong idea!

My point? Don’t give up. Finish what you started. Just like me, you never want that empty/unfinished feeling in your mind. Again, I am just sharing my story, that’s all. Thanks for listening 🙂

Thank you for telling your story. It is very exciting to here such positive results. And you are right, none of us that have made an attempt at becoming a CPA will ever be satisfied until it is done. CPA behind the name. Very inspiring.

Did you study intensely or did you change review materials or did you just simply buckle down or knuckle down and get it done. I mean I know you did but can you share your process?

How in the HELL did you pass three parts of the exam in one month? That is insane. Congratulations. Good luck on BEC and congrats on never giving up.

    Thanks guys! 🙂

tncincy – I studied very intensely those 1 or 2 weeks for the exams. I used a combination of Wiley/Becker material. MC was the way to go because you can learn the same theory from diff materials, but if a question asks you about a theory in a slightly different way, you get that qs wrong. With tons and tons of qs from becker and especially Wiley, I got practice of almost every possible way that a qs can be asked (pretty much). Even if the real exam asks it in a diff way that you haven't seen before, you will learn the ability to tackle that qs in a more efficient and effective way. As for as AUD, I feel that my knowledge was the EXACT same. If anyone is having trouble with audit, please take this advice (and I reemphasize this a lot) – read the CALL of the question. More than 1 answer choices (heck maybe the other 3) might be right too, but pay attention to WHAT the question is asking for. TRUST ME, this is how I went from 65 –> 90.

Again very admirable story….I am convinced it's doable. I just got to get going and believe that my studying this time is focused. I didn't do the sims and I waited too late to really get into the mcq's. I was trying to follow to the letter, watch the videos, take notes, then do mcq's. So much time went into the video's until I simply ran out of time. But I will redirect to more reading and mcq's so that I won't be in the same boat again, and I will make sure I do many more mcq's.

Very inspiring….it beats 3 months of study any time.

Reload, I think the call of the question is overlooked. Becker does point it out somewhat. REG seems to be the worst offender of asking a tremendously long question with a complicated fact pattern but the question is extremely simple and the facts are not needed. Lesson learned early was read the last line first to see what the question was really about.

    Reg - Passed 82 Nov 2012 - Becker
    Aud - Passed 86 May 2013 - Becker
    BEC - Passed 88 Aug 2013 - Becker
    FAR - Passed 88 Nov 2013 - Becker
