Has anyone had this conversation with their boss? Did it turn out well or tragic?

I recently received my CPA license, received a congrats from the partners and that was about it. I want to ask my boss about what is my future with the company (advancement prospects, taking on more responsibility, etc.) but I just don’t know how. Should I email him and mention it first in the email to give him time to think about it, or do I just go to his office, ask him if he has a few minutes to talk and ask him then?

Thank you in advance for your responses!

Depends, are you in public or industry, how long have you been there and what is your position?

Getting a license opens doors for you but not necessarily where you are.

I'd be happy to hear from my reports that they want to take on more responsibilities and grow. I think you've phrased it nicely – you look for advancement opportunities, not a salary raise right away:) (which might scare some bosses if you're starting with that).

Ask your supervisor if he/she wants to grab lunch and talk about your performance. Tell them you want to continue to grow with your firm. Ask if they have any recommendations on what to invest your time in or if there are additional projects you take on and go from there.
