Why not just make it mandatory to select a forum when making a thread?

(and if that's not possible system wise, why not have the default forum be some kind of “graveyard” forum that won't show up on the forum list, if users are able to move their own threads themselves)

Can users move their own threads like mods? And if mods are able to do it, surely it's possible to allow users to move their own threads, right?

And do you guys have some kind of “trash” forum? Just make another one of those that's accessible to users and make that the default forum.

Should make the default forum something humiliating like “If this is more than my second post here, I should know better by now!” forum… 😉

I always choose, but sometimes it is hard to determine which forum is correct. Plus all posts go to the same place, so I don't get why there are categories at all…

Well you can still go to a subforum if you go to the bottom of the page. And you might want to filter by category if you're studying for only one section and just want to see posts relating to that section.
