    Hello,

I have recently graduated and have been studying for the CPA exam for a few weeks. I recently was offered a job (non accounting) that was to start next Monday but I missed an orientation that was for today. I called them and told them I spaced it but they person in charge already left. Does this mean I wont be getting the job?

@mla1169 – with all due respect, you contradicted yourself in an attempt to belittle what I was saying:

“We all make mistakes it's very silly to even say OP needs to learn something from this…What's important to learn is how to move past them.”

Learning to move past a mistake is learning from your mistake, and is what was implied by my comment.

I don't know why everyone is getting uppity about my giving OP a reality check?

It's not a contradiction at all. Moving past it means applying to other jobs, calling to truthfully explain and ask if the opportunity is still available, or studying for the next exam instead of worrying about it. You are entitled to your take on a post that starts off with “lol”. My real world take as someone with many years of professional experience is that blowing off a mc orientation is not a big deal.

I never said OP shouldn't follow up, still. In fact, my exact quote was: “Although I would encourage you to still follow up on this opportunity and see if they'll be lenient, but just don't count on it.” What did you think my “learn from your mistakes” meant if not to do better next time?

We are saying almost the exact same thing here; I just didn't water it down for OP as I have seen this happen quite a few times before and it didn't end well for the temps who did it. You appear to have had a different experience, so we will just agree to disagree.

One last comment and I'm done: a few of you seem to disagree with my harsh reality check take on the subject. That's fine. I'm telling you what I have seen from working with HR and temps who do not live up to expectations (aka, show up). If you have had a different experience, that is fine.

HOWEVER, OP didn't want a one sided “I think this is what is going to happen” answer (unless s/he just came for reassurance and not actual advice). I gave my real world experience, you gave yours. They are different, that's fine.

THE ONLY person who knows how this SPECIFIC situation is going to play out is the company that OP was to temp with.

That being the case, you may disagree with me but you can't say that I am wrong until OP finds out if his/her job still exists on Monday. End of case.

    Dead horse? Sure why not!

Mc Jobs are everywhere in large quantities. Pretty sure a harsh reality check is overkill in this situation. Basically when it comes to a company looking to hire two HUNDRED temps anybody who is 98.6 and can pass a drug test is treasured. If the person missed an appointment for an actual professional career I'd be inclined to agree with you. Part of the benefit of going into a mass hiring situation is that the expectations of the employer are very (painfully) low and they usually give the employees the benefit of THREE no shows without a call before they terminate.
