So, after studying through 4 parts of the CPA, I feel that the exam is lacking on an essential aspect of modern business/accounting: decision support based off of data & technology. I think the exam is outdated.

I truly believe that utilizing Excel, and being able to mine through data, and create excellent visuals are essential in accounting now, and into the future. I almost think that being Excel & data savvy is greater a skill than to have the acronym “CPA” after your name. I mean the CPA exam is a heck of an accomplishment, but being able to interpret & analyze data quickly is highly essential.

    Any thoughts on this?

In my opinion, the process of obtaining an accounting degree and also the CPA licensure is a process to filter out people who do not have the determination nor the cognitive ability to perform at a higher level.

Excel is absolutely an essential tool for most accountants, but having a well rounded and fundamental/conceptual understanding of the industry and nature of accounting by obtaining a degree and licensure is important for higher level advancement.

For example, learning about the various frameworks, accounting principles, audit/fraud scandals and tax environment, etc all contribute to an employees value and ability to make decisions.

However, I do know some firms that will literally hire anyone and pay them a low wage to do data entry and various analytical work. Many functions in accounting can be highly processed that don't require much educational background at all.

In fact, much of our work can honestly and easily be eliminated by robots eventually if you think about it.

    I like that.
