Hello, I am in the process of applying to take the Maryland CPA Exam and I am also in the middle of thinking of changing jobs to look for a CPA who can help endorse with the requirement “2000 hours/1 year meaningful experience supervised by an active CPA”.

My question: Is the CPA who will certify that I worked for a year should be my direct supervisor? Should that CPA be on the same company? I really need to know that way I can plan AHEAD. My current employer do not have an in house CPA.

Every state has different requirements. It does not have to be your direct supervisor but someone who oversees (or kbows your work and willing to sign) your license. If it's not in the same company you will have to explain the relationship.

Certain states do not required CPA supervise certification. You can pay a fee like $700 and be assign a CPA to evaluate and certifie your job means the standard. I don't believe Maryland is one of them (please check the list).

If that's an approach you want to take, you can be license in those state, but be sure to meet the requirements. Some states required you to fulfill the exp within X years after the test.

You should also noted that if you want to later transfer your license back to Maryland it might be subject to additional requirement. NY required 4 years to be on the license before transfer to avoid taking the test and exp again.

Thank you JFKGY. I will try to do more research. I kept on searching these past few months but can't find a clear answer. So I am really looking for someone who is in Maryland who is familiar with the situation. Unfortunately, since I got my bachelor's degree outside of USA, I have a shortage of connections.

I'm from MD, recently licensed. It does not have to be your direct supervisor, just someone who can vouch for you and your work. If not your direct supervisor or someone who works with you, you'll just have to explain how they know your work.

on the form it says, for the endorser to fill out: IDENTIFY YOUR WORK RELATIONSHIP WITH THE APPLICANT AT THE TIME. (SUPERVISOR, MANAGER, ETC.). IF NONE, EXPLAIN.
