MBA vs MS !!

I only need 30 more credits to hit the 150 requirement for NYS but instead of getting my MS, I think I will go for my MBA. MBA is a 2 year program so I was just wondering, once I have the 30 credits, will the CPA requirement be satisfied or would it be complete only when I finish getting my MBA fully?? I mainly ask because work experience does not count until the 150 credits are fulfilled. Just double checking that after the first year of MBA, if I’m working for the second year, that it would count towards the CPA requirement.

    Thanks all!

I think NYS only requires a Bachelors, and then the additional 30 credits.
I don't think you need the MS or MBA in hand as long as you hit the 150 with all the requirements.

I also am not sure that your work experience does not start until you have 150 is accurate.

Best bet is to confirm with NYS though. I went the 15 year path.

@ReckedRacing Oh right, I was aware of not needing an actual masters degree but I was just wondering if I were to get my MBA, if my work experience would start counting after the first year aka once I hit the 150 requirement. Otherwise, I would just get my MS to ensure that I didn't have to wait another full year before it started to count.

Also, I read on nysscpa.org “An applicant meeting the 150 semester hour education requirement must have at least one-year of full time, or the part-time equivalent).” I interpreted this as only AFTER the 150 credits, my work experience would count.. do you disagree? I have been working at a CPA firm for almost 2 years now and I always assumed it didn't count since I have yet to finish the 150 credit requirement.

    Thanks!

I would be under the opinion that you have already met the work experience requirement.

People under the grandfathered 120 hour path needed 2 years work experience, unless they opted to get 150 hours, then they only needed one year experience.
People under the 150 hour path only need one year work experience.
I am not aware of any stipulation that the work experience be gained AFTER you meet the education requirements.

Not an expert. Might be helpful to cross reference with forms and instructions from NYS CPA itself as that would be considered more of a primary source document than the .org website.

Form 1 and Form 4B, and instructions to Form 4B specifically.
I do not recall reading any such requirement on any of the forms.

My opinion…if you're doing 30 credits…get a Masters out of it. I'd also really think about what you want to do in the future…if you stay in tax, I think a Masters of Tax has far more value (actually I think it has more value in most ways). Masters in Accounting might be easiest because, at most schools, it's really mostly CPA prep from what I've heard/read.
