So, here is my debate. Why people are so stubborn to not understand the difference between designation vs. a degree… People are so confused putting MBA after their name (which is incorrect since this is NOT a designation) and that bothers me because we are working hard to be recognized for this designation (CPA) and thus we actually deserve to use it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying MBA is not an accomplishment (it is), I am just saying that this should not be included after your name because it looks silly… I also hate the fact that in the corporation I work for, they hired a new senior accountant (with an MBA) and he puts it in the email signature (I guess he wants to feel special)… Also I would look silly if, for instance, put MAcc after my name (because I do have Master in Accounting)…

I founnd the following article interesting: https://watchyourwallet.blogspot.com/2008/06/should-i-put-mba-in-my-title-on-my.html

Well if you need x MBA to accomplish what you would like then why would you get y MBA when only x is necessary. Not to mention all the compound interest that you could be benefitting from instead of taking on the debt.

Someone may want to check the weather forecast in Hades because I'm about to agree with John Tucker.

A top 25 is great if you're there on someone elses dime. If youre driven you can achieve the same results from z lower ranked school. If you're the type of person who believes your alma mater determines your market velue prepare to be disappointed.

Interesting. I imagine there's a certain degree of cronyism with almost anything, but it is something I plan to do sooner or later. Just not right now though; an MBA would serve as little more than a superfluous commodity for me. If I ever do end up breaking out of accounting/finance and getting into more of a managerial or role or something, I suppose it couldn't hurt as a nice little accessory to have in my pocket.

Now, when getting an MBA, I've heard that the top programs are extremely competitive, and that it's almost better to big fish in a small pond than vice versa. Basically, if you can't get the top of your class in a top 10 MBA program, you'd have been better off just getting an MBA with a lesser ranked program? Is there any truth to this?

Maybe this will explain the value of a CPA vs. an MBA. I have 69 credits towards an MBA. This is the exact amount I need for the CPA designation in my state. I don't find value in taking two extra courses and spending $6k at my current university because an MBA from there is not worth the label. CPA will open doors. MBA, unless from a top school will not.

@ acome, It is my understanding that a lot fthe top MBA programs have a non-disclosure requirement for grades so it's not true from a grade stand point at least with those schools.
