This is a thinking out loud type of post; not really a question, but looking for positive feedback on what I am thinking.
So… as I am studying, I am looking for ways to make this study less boring by branching out a bit.
I am in Becker – and, if I may say, the videos (I think) have the worst humor in them, the language is often abstruse, and they are more sedentary than motivating. Yes, it’s good stuff to center on for the exams, but I dont think Becker does much more than confuse me with boredom.
That said, I take Becker’s organizational structure (i.e. the topics in each class), and I reference them to look for appearances in the real world. I came across a lot of good tutorials on YouTube; work experience is helpful, even watching movies ranging from Limitless to The Wolf of Wall Street to Margin Call to The Social Network to Sea Biscuit (btw, I realize the movies are fictionalized, but some do portray interesting accounting scenarios)… But – then – the other day I found a little 2 min video on Investopedia that just totally sweet…
I’ve been studying the EPS and Weighted Average Common Shares Outstanding and Capital Structures… and somehow my train of thought caught wind of tie-ins to the PE Ratio… So I went the extra step, and, wow… it all came together in 2 mins…

I’ve been studying that stuff in Becker’s book forever, and Becker is so dry I’d have better spent my time as watching the grass grow… But that little tutorial summed it up in 2 mins, and I didnt even expect to study the PE ratio when I set out to learn it…
The tutorial actually seems to be written for financial advisors, who have to sell stock, not CPA’s… Perhaps that makes a difference because a financial advisor might have to keep clients motivated to buying, so maybe the explanations are deliberately made more entertaining…
But anyway… I guess my question, if there is one, is… how do you make your study both productive and fun?
