Hi Everyone,
I’m planning to open a cpa firm in Massachusetts but I have not idea of how to set up my fee structure. Does anybody know how much a cpa normally charge per hour consultation, bookkeeping services, payroll, tax preparation, etc? I’d appreciate any feedback. If it’s not in MA, how much they normally charge in big cities? Thanks

How many years experience do you have?
Seems a bold move to set up shop without having any idea of what billings rates should be.
Hourly rates will be variable for all the different services you mentioned.
Competent external bookkeepers get 40-50 an hour, so I would assume in-house bookkeeping at a CPA firm would be 80-100/hour, but it depends on the level of staff doing the work. If you have a CPA or CPA candidate with 1-3 years working as a junior accountant they probably bill out 100/hour for their time.
Tax prep can be by the form, or by time for the service. CPA rates in my area are typically 150-360 for the high end partner. If you are this fresh that you don't know what to charge I doubt you can get more than 150-200/hour tops.
Payroll rates – you should check with Paychex and ADP in your area to get their rates, and then charge more or less than them if you want to detract or attract that type of work.

Congrats Macpas on your boldness to open a firm. Those are great questions you pose. I would like to know as well (not for MA) but for conversation and research, is this information or firm development offered under AICPA? or other Accounting organizations?
Competition is not going to tell anything when moving into the neighborhood so to speak, so where would a cpa get information to start or even network, price set or get marketing advice.
