How often do people get really embarrassing low scores?

I am scheduled to take my first ever attempt at one of the exams (BEC) on August 30th. Studying was going pretty on schedule until about 2 weeks ago when I began interviewing for a few jobs. I currently work full time and I am handing in my 2 week notice today. I will have 3 days off and then start a brand new job and then 2 weeks later take the exam…..I am terrified that with all this stress going on……what if I embarrass myself with a truly low score….I could reschedule but I already told my new employer about the exam date and they are letting me off work to take it……how late can you reschedule?

You can reschedule up to 24 hours in advance for a $90-something fee. 30 days or more is free; 5-29 days is about $35, and I think that 4 days – 24 hours is $90-something.

If you are able to study some through all of that, I'm sure you won't get something super-embarrassing like a 20. I think the lowest score I've seen around here is in the 50's…I've seen several in that range, but I can't think of any off-hand that were lower than that.

But…there's no doubt that with all of that going on, your life is going to be in upheaval! Whether or not you can pull off a pass depends on how familiar you are with the material and how well you do in stressful situations. I think it's doable, but I won't lie and say it's easy! 😛

How long have you been studying for BEC so far?

My really embarassing low score was around a 60…I'm better than that and I knew it. No one besides myself ever knew about the 60 because I didn't tell anyone. While I was disappoined in myself, taking the exam gave me a good feel for how the questions were worded and what information the test encompassed.

Bottom line…I'd take the exam on time. You may get lucky and pass, you may already know more than you think you do so luck is not an issue, and if nothing else you'll get real-world exam experience for all of your future tests.

Good luck in your new job and on passing your exams.

A low score isn't the end of the world. You don't have to share the # with anybody, you say you didn't pass this time.

That said, unless you'll be working 100 hours per week while you're learning your new job, I don't see why you can't pull it off.

My embarrassingly low score was even lower than some posted here. Like, way lower. I also don't post it in my signature because I am THAT embarrassed.

    I just rescheduled myself: $35 for 30-5 days; $88 for 5-1 days.

I will say though, that most of us think we fail. I thought I did miserable on Reg but I pulled through with a 77. Chances are that you won't do as bad as you think. But your score is YOUR score. Nobody needs to know. Anyone who hounds you to know is a jerk.

I am proof positive that embarrassing scores will not kill you! All you can do is the best you can do…then you dust yourself off, get mad and try again.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I do plan to take it as I have already been studying over 6 weeks and have another 30 days before I take it. I know I am just going to have to buckle down and do it now….and if I fail majorly, I can just blame it on all the crazy transitions going on at the time. (right?) 🙂

I guess a part of me was wondering because I see lots of post with 60's and 70's and the occasional 50's but what if I get in there totally blank out and make a ridiculous low score then I will be all embarrassed.

@smyoung – my score was substantially lower than any posted here. You'll likely do much better than I did 🙂 I think you'll do great!

There was someone awhile back who posted (2-3 months ago?!?) who said that he/she scored a 16 on AUD. I'm pretty sure it was a foreign candidate and he/she might have been just trying to blow one past the rest of us, but that's definitely the lowest that I have come across.

One of my friends took FAR and literally guessed a, b, c, d, a, b, c, d…. because she wasn't ready and just wanted to get a feel for the exam. (yeah it sounds stupid, but this happened). She got a 25. Kinda makes sense if you think about it.

I got a 56 and 2 59's in AUD, BEC and REG when I took them 8 years ago. I didn't really study, I was burnt out after graduating from college and I just attended the review courses and took the exams… I feel like I've learned soo much in 8 years of working in accounting, so much more than I did in college so hopefully that means higher scores!! Oh, plus I'm really studying!

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

@CPApracticer – My really low score was for FAR. I got through 4 chapters (but didn't really “learn” them). I was out of college and didn't feel like studying/didn't dedicate myself to studying. What I changed was that now I'm actually studying and trying to learn. However, my past anxiety with FAR is now causing issues with FAR this time around. I think FAR is just going to be a difficult one for me.

My past score with BEC was a 60, and I got through two chapters. My last time with AUD, I got through 2 or 3 chapters and got a 71, so I figured if I actually studied the whole book, I would do well, and I did! REG I signed up for twice and didn't show up (nor did I even unwrap the book from the plastic). Poor choices all around!
