    Hi Ninjas –

Just looking for perspective and feedback from you guys on a personal question regarding an internal job posting with my company. So I am a FA (3+ years). There is a new SFA position (these are very rare) but it is tax-oriented and the requirements list is extensive (CPA, Public experience of 4+ years, working knowledge of tax both state, federal, etc.). The position has been open for months now and I am not entirely sure that they’ve found anyone for it (or they are just taking their sweet time). My question is this – would it be ridiculous for me to apply given that I have no tax background but I have my CPA and MBA? I am the only internal FA with a CPA and also a MBA. I just don’t want to look presumptuous applying for it but wanted to get your general take on it.

    B - 74, 12/6/13 82
    A - 70, 11/4/14 89!!!

I'm done 🙂 Many thanks to Jeff, A71 and Roger CPA!!!

Based on my brief experience in tax, I think it's extremely unlikely you'd get an SFA position there with no tax experience. A CPA and MBA do not give you working knowledge of tax. Is there any way you could reach out to someone in that department or the hiring manager to tell them you're interested but not sure if it would be appropriate for you to apply? It might be better to talk to someone about it first based on your circumstances.

It's a new department – there isn't anyone really to talk to but my former manager said I should go for it (his idea – not mine). Just doesn't feel like it would work though. Right now there is only a newly hired VP of Tax and nothing else. Hence me posting about it here.

I'd go for it. Be ready to explain how the position fits in with long term career plan, and the opportunity to grow and gain exposure. Yadda Yadd Yadda. You may have some of the intamgibles they are looking for so give it a shot.
I don't think you'd be presumptuous in applying. If you applied then told all your co workers youre going to get hired, that's presumptuous

If your former manager said you should go for it then you absolutely should (if it's something you actually want to do). I don't think it's presumptuous either, I just know at my company it would be a very long shot; but it sounds like you have a unique situation with it being a new department and all. I hope it works out!

For what's it worth, if you don't go for it, you definitely won't get it. Sometimes it's worth just taking that leap. If they catch you, great. If not, then pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep jumping.
