Now that I’m a CPA, I plan on creating an L-I account. Are you able to filter who can see whether you’re on the site or not? For example, is there a filter to exclude people from “X” company? My concern is that my employer will see my resume and assume I’m looking elsewhere and just be suspicious of me because all of a sudden I have my resume out there. Or am I being overly paranoid about this?

I believe L-in is much more than job searching. It is a professional networking site that allows you to establish connections and grow. I have people who contact me for my opinion or advice on many things. This leads to referrals and future business.

1. There's a huge difference between posting your list of accomplishments on LinkedIn and posting your Resume on Career Builder. They are not one in the same, so don't sweat it!

2. LinkedIn, in my mind, is the only acceptable social networking site. If you're worried about losing your job due to social networking sites; I'd be more concerned about your Facebook account (if you have one).

3. LinkedIn could create business referrals to your current employer. That's your best defense if approached by your boss.

I doubt your employer will be suspicious if you put a resume on LinkedIn. It's pretty common for people to either directly upload their resumes to their profile or to fill out their profile using the information on their resume.

Now, there are a couple of privacy options if you want to enable them. You can prevent 3rd degree connections from seeing your full profile, and you can also disable notifications when you connect with someone new (it might look suspicious to your employer at company X if you add three new recruiters from company Y, e.g.).

Like @san4596 said, I use it for professional networking. I've connected with university classmates, professors, recruiters, future coworkers, friends, and forum users. I've also talked to a lot of people about CPA exam stuff.

I see no problem at all with having a LinkedIn account. I don't think that someone should automatically assume that you are looking for new job. I have completely crossed that line though. ha ha. I do have my resume posted on Monster and Careerbuilder. I was very candid with my boss though and let him know that I have to find something that pays better considering all of the work I have put in. If they want to fire me, I guess they will fire me.

It shouldn't be viewed strangely. If you want to keep it more private, just keep your “public profile” (i.e. what people who aren't your connections) very limited like just your name/title/company. You can add additional detail and only make it visible to people who you add as connections.

If you don't want your boss/management to know much about you, then just don't add them and search through privacy settings to limit what types of activity are posted or shared with your connections.
