Leaving a job after less than a year

So I’m curious to hear other peoples experiences with leaving a job pretty quickly, like less than a year.

Here’s my story: after graduating, I got a job working as an auditor for a small CPA firm. Was there for about 11 months and because of location (won’t get in to that) and culture (won’t bore you with that either), I moved back to where I went to school and got a job with a non-profit (I interned there while I was in college) and was promoted to controller within about 3 months (weird circumstances but I proved myself capable with not a lot of experience). I was in that position for almost 3 years. It was a good gig. Decent pay, excellent flexibility and understanding. I worked way more than I probably needed to, but they worked with me. Medical benefits sucked, but it’s a small non-profit. They paid for all CPA costs (licensing and CPE).

For a lot of reasons, it was time to move on professionally and where our living situation was. SO, my best friend (across the country) told me about an accounting job at her work (another non-profit) and it intrigued me so I applied and everything just fell into place. So I took a leap of faith and moved across the country to an area I’d never been to.

Fast forward and we get to the area and it’s a crap hole. The area is very run down, the energy sucks, everyone is incredibly unhealthy. Add on to that, I really don’t like the job. After about a month, I knew I have ZERO desire to do this long term. It’s in a specific industry of non-profit with specific rules and just the culture is awful. Just not a good fit for me. If I loved the area, I’d be content with the job. If I loved the job, I’d try to be content with the area. But since neither works for us, I want out.

SO, I’m starting to job search. My problem is the org has a June 30 year end and my predecessor just didn’t do her job and I’m still cleaning things up 3 months later. I am shooting to be out and move (I’m looking at Boston) by end of September, early October, putting me at like 6 months. They didn’t pay for any moving expenses, CPA costs, and salary is the same I was previously making (there was a raise when I get my NY CPA license but I don’t care about that anymore, I despise the state of New York after 3 months).

I don’t feel guilt persay about wanting to leave so quickly. If I don’t fit I don’t fit. I am just curious to hear about other people’s experience.

Also, anyone with experience in the Boston area have recommendations on anything? I know cost of living in insane and I’m shooting to live outside of the city.

    😀

I have a good friend who lived 30 minutes outside of Boston for most of his life and after living in New Orleans for undergrad he would go on and on about how great the bus system in Boston is. On that front, living outside the city shouldn't be a problem. He did it when he started his first job in Boston until he found a placde. You can commute to the closest bus station and get around that way.

I don't have any experience with Boston but I left a job last year after being there only 3 months. It was the right decision (there were ethical issues and leadership issues). I was surprised when interviewing how many people understood my situation from personal experience.

I pray you find something you love and that fits for you and your family!
