Hey guys,

I was considering law school, since my colleagues from my undergrad are attending Law School, however I’m in Audit and not in Tax. Would law school still be worth it for me in this case?

I'm bringing this back because this is a question that I have as well. What areas can an accountant get into with a law degree? Is it worth it? I imagine you could do acquisitions and mergers or tax attorney, but what else. For me it seems like having this skill could really help boost my confidence and make me more well rounded. Thoughts?

Are you for real? you are considering attending law school because your colleagues are going to law school? You have to ask yourself why you want a law degree? law industry is saturated and many grads are struggling to find full-time work. 3 years of school, no salary, and huge student debt.

You don't have to be tax attorney after getting a law degree. You can work in business valuation, litigation, divorce and property settlement, Securities law. CPA/JD combo can be powerful if you make right moves. Just remember, go to best law school you can get into and maintain top grades. Good luck!

alloutofkuai, apologies in advance for a somewhat harsh perspective, I've seen way too many of my classmates unemployed, so take this as a warning.

As a lawyer myself I see absolutely zero value in you pursuing a law degree UNLESS (1) you get into a program with one of the top 15 programs in the country and (2) you aspire to work for a major law firm (which also means you'll work 60-80 hours). I'd seriously reconsider if it's worth the money if your LSAT is below 165.

If you're not going to work in tax law or M&A with a law firm, I don't see how this degree will benefit your career. If you plan to work for a Big4, your income won't be different whether you're partner with a CPA or a principal with a law degree. Lawyers starts with a higher salary, but things get smoothed over the first 4-5 years. By the time you're a manager your comp is performance-based and has nothing to do with your degree.

Son, I appreciate your thoughts on a law degree considering you have one. I starting at EY soon so I'm looking for extra ways to stand out and be a better more knowledgeable person. I am gunning for partner in the next 10-15 years so I feel like planning some things wouldn't hurt.

cpa1982, I was told by admission at Ohio University that I could get in to their program which is pretty highly regarded for masters. I definitely will be getting my masters I just wonder if a JD could add to it. My goals are pretty high so I like to have a plan for what I will do. Overall, I'm looking for experiences that will differentiate myself from the others.

Many professors at MST program have both CPA and JD. It is good to have a JD if you work in tax. One of my professors has a CPA, JD, CGMA, and MBA. You should go for it!
