I finished my accounting degree this year and is still searching for a job. My only experience is from one year of internship with City Hall in their finance dept/accounting dept. I am lacking confidence since my last semester and fear I won’t be able to handle the work load if I get an offer. Has anyone had to deal with confidence issues or lack of it? How hard is staff accountant jobs and what do they expect from you? I know a few people who have told me that staff account jobs are not that hard, but don’t really believe them for some reason. Get after it & find a job! I got my first staff accounting position from Craigslist, so do not discount all sources! I would start volunteering with a local philanthropy group (maybe Rotary?) if your community has one (or Chamber of Commerce?) to make professional business contacts and get your face out in front of employers. You will be able to handle the work load because you'll sit down and do it. They will train you or you'll have to figure it out yourself, and you will make it. We all have (:

No job in the accounting world is hard, from staff accountant to manager level. Yes, you will stumble amd fumble during the early stages and if you're smart enough, you will learn a lot. There is a lot of repetive accounting task in corporate, there's a great learning curve as the years go by; a.k.a experience!

I agree with stoleaway. I sometimes had to accept job offers where I just b.s'd my way through the interview, after very hard study and research.

I then started the job and would go back home and study up to 3 a.m. after my 8 hour work day (excluding the 1 hour of driving). I worked through my lunch, without asking for overtime, I bugged my friends/co-workers when I needed to learn something new.

In no time I was an expert, and so can you be. Think about this-you didn't get through your schooling by mistake. You worked your butt off and you can do the same thing with the new position 🙂

When I started my position straight out of school, they really had no expectation that I would know any particular part of accounting. I could ask questions about anything, and people would just calmly explain until things made sense. And some days I felt like I knew nothing, and that I was the stupidest person to ever fake her way into a job. But now we have a new round of hires, and I am suprised by how much I have learned, how much more I understand.

Go apply for jobs. Get one, and yes, you will have days that are hard, and there will be things you have to have explained to you more than once. Just remember, everyone at your firm was once the new person.

This was a helpful post to read as I am about to start Big 4 in a month also. What northernlights said is comforting, i've also heard that from one other person who interned at a big4 and said how they are all willing to help you. Anyone else agree?

I definitely wish I was one of those people who got all 4 exams done in 4 months, but unfortunately LIFE (being a newlywed, stress, adjusting to newlywed life and cpa exam study life, as well as starting a job with a Big4 which I am very happy about) got in the way, just happy that I am passing period!!

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!
