Hi everyone,

I’m a public accountant from central Illinois. I recently got a possible job opportunity in Houston, TX and am flying down in a week and a half to meet with the employer. I have been to a lot of states but Texas is not one of them. Is there anyone from Texas that can give me advice or opinions? The job is also for a public accounting firm and although the pay isn’t out of this world the benefits are very good. Also… anyone want to buy a house in central Illinois and I hear there might be a job opening at a local firm nearby…

I think you will really like Texas. There is rarely snow, and no state income tax! Can you be more specific about what advice you want? I am moving to Houston in July, I did an internship there, and I've lived in Texas all my life.

You can't go wrong moving to Houston. Traffic can be overwhelming and it is a big place, but the job market here is always one of the best in the country and you will find many opportunities to grow your career. I advise living close to downtown (at least inside 610) if you are new here! good luck!

Just a few remnants of the Bush-era cronies (see: Enron).

Not tryin' to start anything….. 🙂

But Houston is the place to go, career-wise. No one wants to live there because of the humidity, pollution and relative lack of fun things to do. My audit professor said it's the easiest large city in the country to land a Big 4 position for those reasons. (Denver being one of the hardest.) But there is a lot of oil money and such there, so there are jobs to be had.

Houston is fine for a young person starting out. Housing prices are low and haven't kept pace with the rest of the country over the last half decade since the Katrina refugees fled New Orleans, and most of us with kids would think very hard about moving there. The city is heavy in oil and gas, so you will gain experience in that field.

No fun things to do?? Houston is great. It's been ranked one of the coolest cities in the U.S. I work at a midsize firm in Houston and live in Cypress-area (NW Houston). Plenty of culture, nightlife, etc. Beach is an hour away.

No Obama cronies? Not sure what that means. Houston has plenty of liberals. I am one of them. Texas politics are the only thing I hate about Texas.

Houston has lots of job opportunities, housing is great (Katy, Texas if you have a family), lots of great Mexican food place to choose from, weather is great 10/12 months, July and August are really hot!. One caveat, traffic typically sucks, unless you leave early! And like the others said, NO State Tax.

Just stating that Houston is in a red state, with a red governor … no state income taxes, great job growth, a budget surplus … the example of what our country should mirror.

There are cronies everywhere. However the ones still in Chicago are an extension of the biggest one we've ever seen.

I would refrain from living near downtown (inside the loop), housing is small and pricey, plus the neighborhoods can be somewhat questionable. Living on the West or NW side are good options, although traffic on I-10 and Highway 290 can be unbearable at the best of times and downright nasty at the worst of times (i.e. any time rain falls on the highway).

I have to agree with the humidity being horrible, and the pollution from all the traffic. However, I disagree with there not being anything to do. Houston has just as much as any other city with sports, live arts, and various other types of activities.

My thoughts: 1) Live inside 610, and as close to work as possible. 2) Plan on your children attending private school. 3) Housing market is much cheaper, but property taxes are high. 4) The Texas flag is flown more than any state. 5) You live close to the beach. 6) Tickets to Hawaii are much cheaper now!

I could continue with so much more, but do not have the time. I would say that more than 90% of Texans are proud of their home state.
