I have seen some posts about having gaps between employment when trying to get hired. Here is my situation. After I had my first baby I quite my job, that was my plan all along, now I have three boys and I am done having babies! I have a Master degree in social work but when I decided to stay home with my first son I also decided to take the required classes at the University in town to qualify to sit for the CPA exam. I have failed, FAR boo-hoo but I am hoping to be done by the time my youngest son is three and he is one now. Anyway I never thought of it looking bad for me cuz I quit my job to pursue the cpa exam, while being a stay at home mom, but now I hadn’t really thought about how to explain this to employers. As of right now I have about a four year gap of no working. What is the best way to say it, I guess in a cover letter or on your resume, so it looks professional and is understandable?

I'm not a lot of help, but I will say my current employer in an interview made me explain a 9 month gap in employment from the time I graduated college to the time I started working. I had a really good reason (it sounds like you do also) so it didn't matter.

I would say as long as you can explain the gap it's not an issue at all. Just be prepared to explain why.

I got laid off in July 2010 and found a job in March 2011. A month ago (February 2015) a recruiter was going down my resume on the phone and mentioned the gap. I said, “That was four years ago and I've been working ever since.” He said some employers look into that.

We've all got flaws on our resumes (or we're lying). If you let them get to you, they will. You should try to spin your time at home in a positive business-management scenario. I often cite being a parent as management experience.
