Hi guys, I’m having problems finding any kind of accounting job in my hometown I’m hoping once I pass the CPA exam something will finally open up but since I’m just out of college and my last job was last summer I don’t want a huge gap on my resume I’ve applied for a gov position as an admin assistant but I really want to be a state auditor if the job opens, is it bad to take a job knowing as soon as I can find a relevant job I’m gonna leave and do you think it would hurt me if the job I wanted opened after I’d only worked a month or so and look like I job hop? I just need a job and some money and I’m running out of options.

Wow, that was a long run-on sentence.

I say take whatever work you can find, and explain to the next prospective employer that it was a short term job.

Perhaps what you think is the ideal job is not as ideal as you may think. Keep your options open is what I'm saying. I fell into the mindset that I needed to work in public. I received an offer from a private company and my starting salary is the highest out of my college and I'm only working 40 hours per week. The target salary is in the same range as a senior at a large pubic firm. The decision was a no brainer for me…. I'm still pursuing my CPA even though my current job doesn't require it.

I had a really hard time finding a job, as most people do. Some get lucky but a majority don't land a job they want right away. I live in Minneapolis and even here the accounting community is small, in a sense. Your reputation means everything so think that about that.

Typically, it's not good to take on a job knowing that it's short term. Would you post that job on your resume? Probably not. Let's say you did, how do you explain why it was short-term. Instant red flag to a potential employer. Are you strapped for cash? If so, maybe take this job but never post it on your resume and say you were reviewing for CPA. Employers are pretty open to candidates with job gaps so long as they were doing something, like going for CPA.

I worked at a coffee house for 3 weeks because my it was in my neighborhood, my car was parked out of state, and the way I was getting my car back was to follow my favorite band on tour for a month between those states. I needed money for the tour and that helped. Never put it on my resume, never talked about it.

I would take the job, and explain to your next prospective employer that it just wasn't the right fit for you and you needed to move on.

Colorado, that literally made me spit out some coffee! Awesome story.

donna81: How short term are you thinking? Your career can survive a couple of short stints <1 yr, but over time it will reflect poorly upon you if that continues to happen (with full time jobs, anyway… plenty of people hop around if they are on short-term contracts). Ideally, it never happens, and employers and employees can hold hands and sing songs… but real life gets in the way. Just imagine yourself going for another job in the future (shortly after taking this one) and do you feel you'd be able to convince the next company to give you a chance?

You'll be fine accepting the position, but don't have the mentality while you are working there that it is a short-term job. That will put off the employer and you don't want to burn bridges. Go in and work hard and if the time comes to leave, do it gracefully.

I am strapped for cash and in a weird place. I wouldn't mind the job but I need a job that will count towards my experience require my for licensure and this won't. I deferred law school for a year to get my CPA since I want to do tax and eventually sec law so I'm moving next year and will only be able to do part time 10 hours a week my first year of school by law so I want to get as many hours as I can now. I'm still looking because I don't want to seem unreliable but I need a job.
