I currently work at a CPA firm. I am half way done with the CPA exam and have already finished the CMA exam. All and all is the CPA exam worth it? I know it opens up a lot of job opportunities but for what? 85-150k. That’s not enough money for me. I need a way higher earning potential then that. That may be good money to some people but there is way more money to earn than 85-150k and the field of accounting just doesn’t offer that. Maybe at a Big 4 but that is a small pool and many years down the line me (Late 40’s early 50’s)… Their are 30 year olds making sure more that. If I could do it all over again I definitely don’t think I would of went to school for ACCOUNTING. No way no how

@Rose He is a smart man. What aspect of marketing?.. Wouldn't someone need another degree to pursue those things?

qunny what are you looking for? People have offered their opinions and you are fighting with them. Congrats on doing well studying, congrats on doing “fine” financially. This is a forum for people who want to discuss the CPA exam. People are here because they are considering doing it, have done it or are in the midst of doing it.

We all think it it's “worth it” for one reason or another. You are certainly free to disagree! I don't really know why you would come here ask for opinions and then argue with people when they tell you their opinion that you disagree with. People are motivated by different things. People define “happiness” and success in many ways. If you don't think the CPA is worth it…just stop working on it. We all wish you good luck in the company you are going to start while us lowly CPAs count our pennies.

The CPA designation is what YOU want it to be for you. Yes, we all would want to be millionaires but are we really doing this to be millionaires or to do what we enjoy…accounting. (or related). Don't waste time on something you do not want to do or live with. Donate that nts money and course review money to charity if the question is if it's really worth it.

HAHA you should get off my post. I work in the field and I am giving my honest opinion. I am reading everyone opinion. i also am not fighting any of them off. You might end up counting pennies as a CPA but I don't think anyone else on this post WILL. You never had to comment to be honest but YOU CHOSE to.

This is definitely not the first post where someone doesn't think the designation is worth it. I obviously know it's worth it! But i also know there is a CAP to earning potential as well. I am going to finish the exam because I started it fool.I'm just letting you all know that the money in the field is not there like university teachers beat in your head.

you are still wrong about earning potential. There are CPAs making hundreds of millions and CPAs making 35K. Averages are probably 60-100 depending on where you are in the country. Some people go on to be partners at big 4, some people go on to start their own business where they might go bankrupt or make millions. Some people are okay, making 100K a year…others want more. I don't know why you think you are forced to have a specific job as a CPA. plenty of people go on to be CFOs, CEOs, small business owners, large business owners etc. Why are you so dead set on this “cap”

    Wow.

Again, not to be a jerk, but your attitude is bad. No certification will ever save you from that.

what's stopping you from making all the cash you want? Do you think an accounting degree and CPA certification is stopping you from making money?

Earnings aside what are you interested in and good at? I can't think of any field that you can earn quarter of a million or more without excelling in your field.
