I wondered if anyone is in the same boat -except for my immediate family, no one else knows that I am studying for a CPA.

Here is my (sorry!) long story:

I have my Bachelors in Accounting & Information Systems, Masters in Accounting and Finance, plus almost 20 years of experience and this has always been enough…up until last year when I was up for a promotion but I was told that I “capped out” because I was not a CPA. This was a HUGE shock to me since the CPA has never been a requirement for an advancement within the company.

I busted my a** for 3 years to meet and surpass the goals that were set as a requirement to get the promotion, and at the end the management apologized for “over-promising”.

I realize that some of you might assume that the CPA was just an excuse to not promote me because I am a crappy employee. This is not the case. When received a job offer my company fought for me to stay, increased my pay to match the offer and bumped up my bonus (but not my title).

I figured I needed a CPA whether or not I decided to stay with the current company or look for other opportunities. Obviously, I am still disappointed (bitter) and I feel like I got royally screwed and I don’t think I will be there much longer because I can’t trust the management.

Anyone else, for any reason at all, not telling anyone they are studying?

You get a golden star if you’ve made it to the end of my ramble! 😉

Haha. I love this post. I am actually doing my studying and passing of parts somewhat on the “sneaks” at my work. I work at a non-traditional accounting firm where it really isnt necessary to get your CPA to work here. I studied for and passed my first part, FAR, at the end of last year. When I let my co-workers know, it seemed like my workload “mysteriously” increased. I also work with a bunch of jealous one-uppers that would love nothing more than to see me fail so I don't do better than them.

Anyhow, I have now passed 3 parts and I will be taking my last exam (fingers crossed that I pass) next week. I have not told them anything more of my progress. My hope is that once I pass, I will let them know at the same time I submit my resignation.

    Yay, I love gold stars!

I wish I had kept it secret. I have a very supportive work environment, management, and colleagues, but it sucks to admit when you fail. Especially over and over as people randomly ask how you did, even though I'm harder on myself than they are.

I also take my (hopefully) last exam 3/9 so let's hope we are both finished!

As an older candidate with my own business in a completely different industry, I kept my CPA studies VERY MUCH on the down low as I needed my business to continue to earn money while I transitioned. Once I passed all my exams, I tweaked my Linkedin profile and started quietly using my network to reach out for CPA firm jobs. I was too much of an out of the box candidate for most firms in my tiny area and not able to move due to family commitments. I ended up getting recruited from my linkedin profile back into private industry and got a job as a controller for an engineering and manufacturing company.
