My tip for preparing to study for the CPA exam is to prepare a consistent schedule that you can follow, so you will always stay on track. My tip for taking the CPA exam would be to READ THE QUESTION CAREFULLY!

the best study tip I can provide is to take personal breaks while studying. I personally like to take a 5 minute break every half hour, and 15 minute break every two hours. Also make sure to have time to unwind and take your mind off studying.Whether that be exercising, hanging with friends, a movie, ect.

    Hi Jeff and everyone,

The best advice that I can give when preparing for the CPA or any other certification exam (CMA, CFE, EA, etc.) is to schedule time to study. And I don't mean just say you'll spend two hours a day studying FAR this week. I mean create a firm schedule and stick to it.

For me, I choose to set aside one hour every morning to run sample problems and then an hour each night to review them and take notes. I get up at 5:15, and I'm at my desk by 5:45 every morning (okay, not weekends). I don't leave the desk until at least 6:45-7:00. In the evenings, I plan to be at my desk again by 8:00 and don't get up until at least 9:00 (often later).

Sure, I'm missing out on all of the newest episodes of Psych and The Following, but that's why I have the DVR. Once I pass the exams and have the designation, I can sit down with a pizza and a beer and get caught up. Until then, I remember why I'm doing this; to provide a better lifestyle for my family and to do something that I love. Those keep me motivated when I really don't want to sit and stare at a screen for another hour. (Okay, the pizza and beer are motivating too…man, I'm starving).

    Best of luck to everyone!

Best CPA exam tip I can give is to not study the day of the test. Relax before the test and build your confidence up with some positive thoughts and invisioning yourself passing the test. If you can keep your confidence up, and your nerves down, you'll recall alot more information the day of the exam. Same concept goes for an interview.

    My tip for everyone:

Before you start studying for the CPA exam, make sure you really want to be a CPA. If you are only half sure, it will become apparent when you are trying to prepare for an exam.

If you aren't 100% dedicated to passing this test, you will find hundreds of reasons to NOT study.

If you aren't ready to sacrifice most of your free time for about a year, then don't start studying until you are.

    Best career advice:

    1. There are a lot of accountants (and I am one, BTW)

    2. There are some accountants with personality (me? arguable…)

    3. There are a few accountants with personality and the ability to communicate (me? hmm…)

    4. There are a select few accounts with personality, ability to communicate, and PR/interpersonal skills (me? chasing this every day…)

So many people can do debits and credits. It's the other skills that will help you advance. Don't forget about the “softer” skills!

The most important tip……..DO NOT underestimate these exams, there is a reason why the passing rate is around 50%. Commit to studying like its your job. If you just started studying make sure you have a REALISTIC timeframe for the studying and for the review, and practice, practice, practice. One of those practice questions can be that 75 that you need so use all the time you have. Add another week “just in case”. Life happens. If you are not sure what is the best way to study, maybe don't schedule your exam right away, especially with FAR, its a beast. Stick to your study plan, make it your priority and try to keep your life balanced, it will keep you sane. Its a long journey whether you have to retake anything or not. And make sure you focus on the material, understand the concept, go back and reread information, especially things you struggle with. I noticed a lot of things come together with time. These exams are difficult, but do not underestimate yourself either, you can pass it, you just need to put your mind and time into it!

Use a study planner. Whether you use the free one from Jeff or create your own, write down what you want to accomplish each day. This will help keep you on track. But realize that things happen, so give yourself enough time to be flexible.
