Single Mom Tip: Find your support group before you start studying and let them know that you will rely on them heavily to watch your child(ren). Make a schedule with them in advance so you all know what going on. Make a study schedule (and stick to it!) for yourself and allow time for unavoidable life events. Fortify you and your kids immune systems because chances are someone will get sick.

CPA Tip: Make sure to leave enough time in your study schedule to do some sort of exercise. Routine exercise has helped me stay focused and I think it helps with retaining material. Plus, sitting in a chair watching review course videos isn't the best for your health so scheduling some exercise will help with that.

My tip would be to study in a place where there are almost no distractions. For me, I had to leave my house and go to the library in order to study efficiently. I also think that having the book with you when you're going through questions is a must so that you can look up how to properly calculate a problem rather than just guessing at an answer and then looking at the description.

My tip is to do your research. Search all your options of study materials, be true to yourself to know how you learn best and what you need to be able to learn most effectively. Speak to someone you know that has been there/done that and passed and can show you what you need to do. You can learn from their mistakes and get great tips. Use this person as your mentor and motivation. Finally, make a plan that is an effective use of your time and reasonable and stick to it!

How much you need to study is relative to you, but I suggest:

    1) You should study and take the exam when you are not working, if possible

    2) Definitely ask other people about their exam experiences

    3) Don't be cheap when it comes to review materials

    4) Don't get bummed out if you fail an exam, just keep trying. It's worth it

    BEC 87
    REG 76
    AUD 67, 76
    FAR 67, 79

    DONE!! Feb 2014

My best study tip is to branch out with the study material that you use. I did the live Becker courses which were great. However, I also purchased the Ninja Notes and Audio which helped get different perspectives and ways of approaching the exam. On the way to and from work I listen to the Ninja Audio and then review and RE-WRITE the Ninja Notes during lunch to help drive it home. Then I practice the Becker multiple choice questions and task-based simulations to drive everything home. It has helped me a lot to not focus on only one point of view and think about the concepts from different approaches. I hope this helps and good luck future CPA's!

    REG - Passed (8/22/12)
    BEC - Passed (2/26/13)
    AUD - Passed (12/4/13)
    FAR - (2/24/2014)PLEASE!!!

    Hi,

The best advice I can give you concerning the CPA exam is to take the part that is the most challenging for you first. Also, schedule the exam and stick to your study schedule. If you don’t schedule the exam, you will never find the time or the motivation to study. As for general accounting career advise, don’t be afraid to get out of your conform zone. After a while, accounting can become monotonous, so don’t be afraid to take on new challenges and/or projects.
