My best study tip is to put in the TIME it takes. I am using Becker and if you actually watch all the lectures, take the notes, and do ALL the homework problems and practice tests, you WILL pass. Shortcuts just don't exist when it comes to the CPA exam.

Study Tips: Study everyday and stay discipline. Do not give in to peer pressure and keep your eye on the prize. It will all be over sooner the more time you put in.

The best exam trick I have used is this. Take your note cards and say the question out loud. Without looking at the answer, on the back, answer the question out loud like you are speaking to or presenting it to the class. if you answer it right put a check mark. if you get it wrong put an x and put it to the side. I used this for FAR and passed with flying colors. I whipped through the multiple choice questions. I always take a break after each section to make sure I calm down and slow down. I feel that 1-2 mins really helps propel me through the next section. Hope this little “nugget” will help my fellow ninjas.

    Have a great day!

Career tip, get an internship, it we'll help you decide if accounting is right for you, make good money, and it generally turns into a job if you want it.

    Best Study Tips

Take a moment before you start your studying just to clear your mind and get rid of all distractions before studying. I usually do that after work and turn off my phone. Really focus and give it a 100% while studying so that you are efficient and not wasting your time. I watch the videos and then read the book just for repetition sake and right after i work on the MCQs and really try to understand why each answer is incorrect to better understand the concepts. The #1 thing in studying is know the concept, know the basics and the foundations so you can build on it. If you are not that great on a certain subject, try to work on it and at least understand the basics so you can make an educated guess. Also make sure to utilize A71 forum if you are stuck because it's more than likely that someone will be able to help.

    FAR: 80 (Aug 2013)
    AUD: 91 (Nov 2013)
    BEC: 79 (Feb 2014)
    REG: 80 (May 2014)

Do not get discouraged with topics that you do not understand in the beginning. I took accounting classes for the past two years and I still have trouble understanding Pensions and SHE. Just keep at it and make sure to re-read everything you write down. Sometimes during note taking you are going so fast that you write things you do not understand later. You can always write keywords in the margins that help you remember something specific. Always read the stem of the question and understand what you are looking for before you shuffle through the information given.

As for a career tip, I pretty much have to say do not follow others. Ask yourself what you want to be doing in five years and then ten years. If you do not know, don't worry you are normal. But, it is a great way to start thinking about the path to take to achieve your goals. Don't leave things to tomorrow, we live in TODAY (present). If you think you may not be ready, you will never be ready. JUST DO IT.

Thanks for all the posts! A lot of people giving great tips.

When interviewing, go in with at least 5 questions you want to ask the recruiter/ accounting partner written down in your portfolio. At the end of the interviewer, ever interviewer has ALWAYS asked if I had questions. I say yes, open up my portfolio and ask the questions. This gives you time to have well thought out questions, shows that you're prepared and more that you are really interested in the position.

During one of my mock interviews my Interviewer wrote me a message and said she loved that I took the initiative to do this. And that opening up your portfolio to read the thought out questions, isn't a bad thing.

Single Mom Tip: Find your support group before you start studying and let them know that you will rely on them heavily to watch your child(ren). Make a schedule with them in advance so you all know what going on. Make a study schedule (and stick to it!) for yourself and allow time for unavoidable life events. Fortify you and your kids immune systems because chances are someone will get sick.
