My advice for studying CPA is simple: start early and study hard (or not that hard, but at least finish majority of the contents even if just listening to lectures) for the 1st time, and put aside the final week before exam to scan the whole material for a general idea (maybe to generate some easy-to-get notes too). In my opinion, CPA exams are about broad coverage rather than much depth into the knowledge. Learn the material twice – one in details and one in general – can give you pretty good impression and confidence on the exams.

I am a full-time student right now and some school courses may help me pass. If you work full time I suggest separating study contents into small pieces and take them down a little bit EVERYDAY, even it's only 10 minutes. Thus I recommend Ninja flashcard (thanks Jeff for the $1 flashcard deal a few days ago!). It really helps utilizing piecemeal time on the study.

Finally one small tip: when you sit there and take the exam, make sure you do a good job on the very 1st section. It really matters when it comes to the final score. Not only it might decide whether you'll get more difficult problems in later sections, but also by making it good helps build confidence in the battle field.

Speaking of career – I think it would be much easier to get a job in public accounting industry when you pass all 4 CPA exams, right? I know a lot corporations value CPA certificate highly too when it comes to recruiting.

    So, wish everyone good luck!

One thing that I have learned is that if you start to get easily distracted while studying, take a short break, clear you head, and get right back to it. Sometimes stepping away from it for a few minutes or so, will help you keep focus. However, you don't want that break to be for too long, because then you may have a tendancy to procrastinate and waste precious time. I will study for 30 minutes to an hour, and then clean the house for a few minutes or make something to eat.

My best tip- or word of encouragement! Remember, if you are eligible to sit for this you are capable of passing it!

“If you don't believe in yourself why would anyone else.” Be your #1 encourager. I visualize myself as a CPA, all of this behind me. In my mind… I already have 3 extra letters after my name. 🙂 It's not IF I pass it's WHEN.

    Career Tip:

Interviewing can be stressful, especially if you are out of work. However, the interview is for the employer to gain further insight into your work and educational experience and see if you are a good fit for the company. Please also understand that you are also to interview the employer to determine if it is a good fit for you. Ask questions that are important to you. Such as understanding if the work/life balance fits into your life as a parent, a friend, a skier, etc. It has to work or you could be unhappy later. Ask questions to understand what skill set you will learn because you are also building your resume. Good luck on the CPA!

CPA exam tip: When you're studying, realize that you are studying to learn and retain the information, not just to sit down and for the sake of it call it studying. When you are nearing the phase where you are tuning out and daydreaming, get up and take a break. I find taking a walk around your neighborhood a good way to relax and really get you back into that studying mood.

My best career related tip is to research the accounting software used. If you are interviewing for a job, and you don't have experience with SAP or JPE or whatever program they use, by telling them that you have done some research on how the program is used in the position you are interviewing for, that speaks a lot to your enthusiasm towards the job. Most job postings state what software is used, so you can go off of this.

As an auditor, whenever I'm working on a client that uses a program I'm not familiar with, it's helpful for me to go and get a basic understanding of how the system works so I know what I'm looking for when I'm doing fieldwork.

The best exam prep tip I can give you is to mix it up. What do I mean by that? Well when you wake up and have a bowl of Cheerios read some Ninja Notes. Lets say you head to the gym after, listen to the audio on the treadmill or even in the car on the way to work. When you get to work (if your boss is cool with it) do a few MCQs. Try a few more at lunch. Before you leave for the day do a few more. I have learned to do 5 question practice tests on Wiley for each topic until I reach 80% or higher. When I reach 80% on a topic I move to the next. I do all the topics over 2 days at the longest (this can take awhile if you are not scoring high). Take notes for flash cards. As you memorize flash cards, toss them from your deck.

Repeat as needed! Oh and be honest with yourself. If its your best friends birthday and you know you are going out tonight….wake up early and hit the books, skip lunch and hit the books. Good luck everyone!
