I have CPA exam advice and work advice.

CPA exam: Keep the end goal in mind. Don't get discouraged after your first exam score. The first exam is where you really get a feel for the format and the environment.

Work advice: If it's not for you, get out. I have done both public and private accounting. I was in public accounting for only 6 months when I switched to private accounting. It's not that the work was too hard or the hours too long, I just didn't enjoy myself and didn't enjoy what I was doing. I made the switch to private accounting against everything people told me and I couldn't be happier that I did. I absolutely love my job and can see it as a long term career. My old partner told me I was making the biggest mistake of my life, but I went through with it and have found a job that I thoroughly enjoy and a company that I will be with for the long haul. When it comes to your career, do what you think is best for yourself and no one else. You spend most of your life at work, so why be miserable?

For me, the best study advice I would say is to learn how to NOT multi-task. When you're studying, STUDY. When you're not, relax/work/eat/hang out with friends and family. It's extremely easy to get burnt out by acting like you're studying all the time when it's not really being effective anyway. Also, study more than you think you already are. You'd rather pass the exam than regret the times you know you could have been studying but were not.

My best tip would be to create a calander and write down daily goals, as you finish your goals cross them off. It makes me feel relieved as my test gets closer to look back and really see what I have done to prepare. For instance, my daily goal now for BEC is 50 MCQ's, review Becker Flashcards, and of course review my NINJA Notes. So everyday on my calendar says the same goal, and I cross them off as soon as I finish. Remember is quality not quantity, really understand what you are doing and why. 🙂

Lots of great tips!! Here is a few that have already been said…. Write it out. Write notes, write questions, write the answers, write out the questions you get wrong, write out the questions you get right. Also I think someone else has said a few times- When you study, just study!! Don't check email, don't check your facebook, just STUDY. Study those sections that you just HATE and you keep putting off. I also have a 1/2 hour commute and have the 10 point combo- I listen to Jeff all the time- on the way to work, on the way home, picking up my kids – it reinforces what I have already gone though in my regular review course. Good luck everyone!!

My best tip is to NOT study at home. It is so easy to get too comfortable, be distracted, surf the internet, make food, play with your animals, etc., when you are home. I've never been a better housekeeper than when I was avoiding studying!

Things have really started turning around for me now that I am staying after work a few hours each day and studying at my desk instead of in my PJs on the couch. It's has been so much easier to concentrate and plow through the material. If it's possible for you to study away from home, I recommend it!

Study Tip: Don't just copy notes, try and phrase them the way you would understand. And do MCQ until you want to throw up!

Also, switch things up. Lecture an hour, notes, mcq.
